WOMEN’S INCLUSION

Unemployment Board REPRESENTATION MADE Appointment of women to the Unemployment Board is. urged in a resolution of tbe National Board of the Y.W.C.A., which was submitted to the Minister of Labour, the Hon. S. G. Smith, yesterday. The resolution, which expresses appreciation of the appointment of women to the Advisory Committee on Women’s Unemployment, asks that women should be included in the personnel of the Unemployment Board, and that a fair proportion of the money available for relief should be used for the relief of women out of work. It is suggested that labour which does not displace women already employed, such as domestic help in homes, the setting up of (cooking and sewing centres to provide for those affected by unemployment, might be subsidised.' Another line Of subsidised endeavour which is suggested is the establishment of small enterprises on the land, such as market gardening and bee farming, located near enough to large cities to allow of the employment of the girls who live at home. The board also passed resolutions urging that efforts should be made to prevent the exploitation of girls and women by unnecessarily low wages, and that some permanent provision should be made for research into the matter of women’s work. The use of the Y.W.C.A. equipment a-id buildings for the establishment of a free employment exchange was also offered to the Government.
