MARKET EXPANSION
Opportunities in East WOOLGROWERS’ VIEW “It is felt that much greater benefit can be derived by concentrating on an expansion of the demand for wool in Eastern countries than by any other method at.the present time,” says the report of the New Zealand Sheepowners’ and Farmers’ Federation. “Readjustment of financial conditions in the Old World will also undoubtedly be of thfe greatest possible benefit to this Dominion, and it is to be hoped that a satisfactory basis of settlement may shortly be reached in order that trade and commerce may once more function in a normal manner, and the present slump conditions be remedied to a degree which will allow our primary producers once more to balance their budgets. “The executive is gratified at the action of the Government in arranging for Mr. L. J. Schmitt, New Zealand Trade Commissioner for Australia, to pay an official visit to Japan and the Eastern countries, with a view to the expansion of trade from New Zealand to the East. The heavy increase in purchases of New Zealand wool by Japanese buyers would indicate a very great expansion of trade to the benefit of New Zealand sheepowners, provided the necessary shipping arrangements can be made.” The report deals also with the subjects of wool research and advertising, which were considered at the Empire Wool Conference at Melbourne. In the opinion of the executive, a small levy would be fully justified, as it would have only a very small effect on the individual cheque and at the same time provide enough funds to enable New Zealand to bear its fair share of the cost of propaganda and the extension of markets, especially in the East. The need for scientific research with respect to wool production is also fully recQgnjsed.. . .
