RUGBY LEAGUE CODE

Matches, at Stadium OLD BOYS BEAT CITY Good expositions of the League code were given at the Winter Show Stadium on Saturday, and entertained a large number of spectators. Newtown A had no difficulty in Its match with the new “B” team in the competition, winning by 24 points to 5. There was more even play in the CityOld Boys match, which was won by the Qty team, 6—2. Putting a good deal of sting into their work, the Old Boys’ forwards were successful.in spoiling-City's attempts to open up play in the early stages of the match. The game was kept tight for some time until at length Leggatt Intercepted a pass and got away in a great solo effort, to be pulled up by the opposing full-back. He passed out, and though the pass went astray, sorpe of his forwards were up in support, and got the ball at toe. An awkward situation for Old Boys was saved by Petherlck taking a good mark off the toes of the forwards. For some time the forwards contested possession round about . half-way, until Petherlck was again seen to advantage. He made a good opening, and his forwards improved on it, Payne scoring well out. Davies failed with the kick. In the second spell the pace increased, if anything. Play was mainly contested by the forwards, and Old Boys early added to their score, T. Robins scoring an unconverted try. Soon afterward Rankin kicked a penalty goal for City. This was the last score of the day. Toward the end of the match the backs on both sides were put in operation more frequently, and handled in several attractive movements. The referee was Mr. O’Grady. Newtown A Beats Newtown B The Newtown A backs showed good form early in this match, and it was not long before the B defence had its hands full in keeping the line intact. Excellent combination by the A’s was soon rewarded, however, and Harris went over for a try which was converted by Noot. Not long afterward another try was scored. For a little while in the first spell the B players looked like providing stiff opposition, but their attacks lost -penetrative powgr through faulty passing and handling. The spell ended with the A’s leading by 8-points to nil, after having had by far the better of play. When the second spell opened it was soon apparent that the A’s would put up a fairly large score. Points came quickly, tries being scored by Holmes, who went over twice, Wano and Russell. One try was converted by Noot, and another by Dutch. After this the B’s put up a much better opposition, and a series of attacks ended successfully when Fraser went over for a good try, which Tier converted. During the remainder of the game the B’s retained their improved form, and the backs particularly were seen in one or two promising movements. . The game ended With the A’s easy victors by 24 points to 5. Games in Other Centres Auckland: Marist 25, Pousonby 10; Richmond 11. City 8; Devonport 20, Newton 5.
