THE BUILDING TRADE Great Falling Off Building permits issued lu the larger towns during the present calendar year are considerably below the level of twelve monhts ago, reports the Government Statistician. The number for May shows a drop of 34.4 per cent, as compared with that for May last year, and the five-monthly total a recession of 35.5 per cent, compared with a similar period of .1930. Permits issued for new dwellings record a decline of 70.6 per cent, for the month and of 64.2 per cent, for the five months, as compared with corresponding figures twelve months earlier. Comparison of the permits for new dwellings issued in the four chief centres during .the months of May, 1931, and May. 1030, records a decline for Auckland of 68.2 per cent., for Wellington 85.6 per cent., for Christchurch 61.5 per cent., and for Dunedin 64.3 per cent, i While the total permits issued ’for new buildings during May exceeded the previous month’s total by 19.4 per cent., the number of new dwellings Included was only 3.4 per cent, ahead of last month, while the value of the. proposed new houses actually declined by 8.0 per cent. The total value of building construction for which permits were issued during May, 1931. Is the lowest ever recorded for a single month since the institution of monthly statistics of building permits, and Is 70.2 per cent. less than the to.tal for May, 1930.
