UNEMPLOYMENT LEVY

Prompt Payment Essential

SIX DEFAULTERS FINED

Forgetfulness or carelessness were the main reasons advanced in the Police Court yesterday when six men were charged before Mr. E. Page, S.M., with failure to pay one or more instalments of the unemployment levy. They were each fined 10/-. Mr. P. H. Kinsman, of the Labour Department, said he did not allege that there had been any deliberate evasion on the part of the defendants. So far as the excuse of forgetfulness was concerned it was hardly possible, he said, for anybody not to be impressed with the seriousness of the unemployment position. Particularly was this so in Wellington. Prompt payment of the levy was essential he added. Delay meant additional work on the part of the police and the department. All thia added to the cost of gdminiutratiou.
