BAR BADLY SHOALED Greymouth Still Unworkable Owing to the heavy seas at Greymouth last week, the bar has shoaled badly, and this, added to the neap tides, has made it unlikely that the bar will be workable until toward the end of this week, when the tides will have improved. The Greymouth bar has now been practically unworkable since May 26, and some of the half-dozen ships bar-bound there have been held up since that date. The vessels bar-bound at Greymouth ye.-’ terdav were the Kalmai, loaded for WeiPoolta. for Brisbane. IDLE SHIPS Britain’s “Laid-up” Tonnage Returns prepared by tho Chamber’ Of Shipping show that there was a furthb increase in the number and tonnage o vessels laid up in the ports of Great.Bri tain and Ireland on April 1 with the figures for January 1. Of late the chamber had extended its Inquiries toi i - elude some of the smaller centres, which, unfortunately, have become important in this connection owing to the immense amount of tonnage now unemployed. Thus at Tollesbury (River Blackwater) on April 1 there were laid up 30 vessels, of 1-~,121 tons net, and at Milford Haven there were Idle 26 vessels of 99,187 tons. „_ , , The total figures for Great Britain anu Ireland show that there were laid up In au ports 773 ships, of 1,890,234 tons net, on April 1, being an increase of as much as 112 per cent, on the figures for a year ago and of 19 per cent, on those for January 1 last. The returns for April 1 Include 1foreign vessels, of 22.982 tons net, so that the British tonnage laid up In the ports of Great Britain and Ireland consisted of 761 vessels, of 1,867.252 tons net, representing nearly 3,000,000 tons gross, or about 4,500,000 tons deadweight. Among the vessels laid up were 30 oil tankers, of 112,195 tons, of which 10, of 47,129 tons, were motor vessels, and, in addition, 14 motor vessels, of 36,945 tons, were Idle. The figures do not include British shipping laid up In oversea ports. THE KARETU. The*Union Company advises that the Karetu is to leave Newcastle to-day and Sydney on Thursday for Fiji and Auckland. AUCKLAND SERVICE. The Wlngatui is now due at Wellington this morning from Auckland, and is to leave here again to-day for Lyttelton, Dunedin and Timaru. The Walmarlno Is to leave Auckland today for Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Timaru, and is due here on Friday morning. The Waiplata was to have left Bluff yesterday, via ports, for Wellington and Auckland, and is due here on Friday. THE HUNTINGDON. The Federal Company advises that the Huntingdon is now to leave Auckland this morning for Wellington to continue discharge of her Liverpool cargo, and Is now due here on Thursday morning. She is to leave here again on Saturday for Lyttelton and Port Chalmers to complete discharge. RANGITIKI’S MOVEMENTS.
