NO MORE CLOCKS

Further School Economy

DEPARTMENTAL DECISION

In the opinion of the Department of Education the provision of clocks for schools cannot be regarded as a necessity. and the supply for the present is to be discontinued. Many Wellington schools apparently possess clocks which are not in order, and the chairman of the Education Board, Mr. T. Forsyth,, said at the meeting yesterday that it was the duty of the school committees to keep the clocks in order. Dr. J. Mcllwraith, senior inspector, pointed out that a number of schools had clocks which were out of order and required attention. Mr. A. C. Blake, an ex-headmaster, told the board that some schools had a clock in every room. A good clock in the corridor would suffice.

In reply to Dr. Mcllwraith, it was stated that the board had no contract for keeping the clocks in order, and the chairman said the board could not purchase new clocks. The upkeep of the clocks was a matter for the school committees.

Mr. AV. 11. Jackson; A clock is as much a necessity as any other equipment in the school.

The architect, Air. G. Powell, said it was suggested some time ago that a master clock should be provided for each school instead of so many small clocks, which cost about £l/1/- each. Take a Holiday!

A further intimation from the Department. was to the effect that it. could hold out no hope that any handwork materials would be supplied for 1932. Mr. C. 11. Nicholls: I suggest, that we take a holiday for six months.
