WOMEN’S HOCKEY

Notes on the Players

(By

“Critic.”)

Centica centre-forward, Miss Prince, played a heady game against Eastbourne, being always prominent. , A promising player In the Old Girls junior B team is Miss Jean Murray, whoae work at centre-forward on Saturday was good. She is speedy and steady. Miss K. Wlniata was the star of the Wenerel van against Hutt. Her performance easily outshone that of her sister forwards.

Mrs. P. Hendle gave a fine display of her prowess at centre-half for Hutt. She was the main source of annoyance to the Wenerel attack. An Upper Hutt forward who Impressed “Critic” with her stickwork against Toa was Miss D. Warnell. Although playing her first game of hockey, Miss Jessie Lowe gives promise of making a good goalkeeper. Her initial effort for Old Girls' junior B on Saturday was surprisingly well performed. Miss Vera Newman gave a sound display at right full-back for Hutt in the senior B game with Karori. But for her flawless tactics Karori -would have won by a much larger score. The right-half work of Miss Nora Gould was outstanding for Hula. She was brilliant in herself, and was instrumental for her side giving Old Girls such a close call. Miss Rita Thomas’s centre-half display for Ramblers was something out of the ordinary in the match against University. Her good work of continually assisting the forwards, however, all went for nought. Miss Lola Renal, left full-back for the Old Girls’ junior B team, was kept busy In the game with Wenerel, and ehe acquitted herself well. Miss Hinga Walker showed to advantage in goal for Old Girls In the senior ,B match with Swifts. She cleared many difficult shots.

In Miss H. Wineera, Toa possesses an enterprising centre-forward. She was wen on her game against Upper Hutt, and through patient waiting secured the side s four goals. She plays a nice stick, and her shooting is powerful and accurate. The winning goal of Miss Helen McLellan, Old Girls’ inside right, was a magnificent effort, being netted in such a position that it would have been Impossible for any goalie to save. The Hutt club possesses a promising player In Miss Silva. Her work at fullback for the junior B team last week was good. Miss Molly Drew was seen to advantage for Ramblers In the lower grade match with Hutt. She was a hard worker all through the game. Miss Clarke filled the position of goalkeeper in the Centics’ team to the great satisfaction of the others. Miss Clarke, who won rep. honours last year, is a forward of no mean ability, but acting on medical advice, will be unable to occupy her usual position for some time yet. The only member of the Old Girls junior A team who did not shirk her duty on Saturday was Miss Dulcie Leonard. The other forwards were afraid to tackle, and lost many opportunities through waiting for the ball. Over-bunching was also noticeable, and this was probably the reason why Wesley piled up such a big score. For a novice, Miss Eileen Simpson gave a wonderful performance In goal for Upper Hutt against Toa. She displayed all the attributes of an experienced custodian, and Impressed the writer with her highly praiseworthy methods of clearing. In Miss Stmpsori Upper Hutt can boast a goalkeeper with a great future. Miss Neilsen, Centics’ centre-half, gave a creditable account of herself against Eastbourne. The pick of Hutt’s forwards on Saturday were pisses ’’Dot’’ Foreman and Sundgren. Misses Orme and Falne gave a poor display for Wenerel against Hutt. Miss Marshall was a strong link In the Upper Hutt A team at centre-half. Her work both on defence and attack was much better than that of the Toa centre. Miss Stewart, who filled the centre-halt position in the Hospital team at a moment’s notice on Saturday, gave an outstanding performance. Prior to coming to Wellington she represented Buller. Ramblers right full-back, Mies D. Fitt, proved to be the stumbling block in Varsity’s attack. Her defence was as sound as a rock. Miss L. Dick also played well in goal, wlAle Mrs. M. Chaplin as right-half was prominent throughout the game. , , ~ Miss Rose Burn, on the Karori right wing, was inclined to be too selfish against Hutt, holding on to the ball too long. As soon as she cures herself of this ,bad fault, the better will her services be appreciated by her sister forwards. Miss Gunn showed up well at centreforward for Hutt against Karori. The respective inner forwards of the Hnia senior team, Misses Woddet and K. Harrison, were a little below form against Old Girls, but Misses Wind, Watson and McClelland made up for the weakness.

General Notes. A Native match is being proposed for the King’s Birthday between Porirua and a Native eleven selected from the various clubs in Wellington. If successfully arranged, the match will be played at Porirua. The fencing of the Tanera Crescent ground is still inadequate lor preventing teams losing balls down the bank. Clubs are constantly complaining, and it is bopeil the council will have the position attended to as soon as possible. . The first hockey match to be played in Upper Hutt will be the senior game between Old Girls and Wenerel, on Saturday. Upper Hutt residents are taking a keen interest in the code.-
