Regret that the municipal system necessitated, the retirement of M. A. Eliott, the defeated candidate for . the ; Palmerston North mayoralty, was expressed by Mr. G. Tremaine in returning thanks for his re-election to the city council. Mr. Tremaine said that it would be preferable to elect ten councillors and permit them to choose their chairman sb that they would not lose the services of a good-councillor.
