CANTERBURY’S WIN

Training College Rugby

NO SCORE BY WELLINGTON By six points to nil the Canterbury Training College Rugby team defeated the Wellington Training College representatives on Kelburn Park yesterday afternoon. The game was the concluding episode in a series of. in ter-training college matches, and by winning it Canterbury drew* level with Wellington, the tournament points being eight all. . Canterbury’s scoring was. done in tlie first spell anil consisted of tries by Brown ami Flynn. The visiting forwards were heavier and played with more cohesion than their opponents, thus enabling the backs to get a very fair share of the ball. Notwithstanding this, there was not a great deal of back play, owing to generally unsure handling, and the game for the most part developed into a struggle between the forwards. The first try came when Brown got over m the corner after a good deal of loose forward play and scrummaging in Wellington territory. Just before half-time a loose forward rush by the Canterbury men saw Wellington hard pressed and defending only a few. yards from the line. A. scrum formed in one corner, Canterbury secured and sent the ball right along the backline to the left winger, who was tackled. Flynn, however, had run round from his position at second five-eighths ami retrieved the situation, scoring a good try well out. The kick failed, and the spell ended with Canterbury leading by 6 points. In the second half the Wellington forwards put up a much better opposition, and neither side gained any great advantage until late in (lie spell. Then Wellington launched a series of attacks, endeavouring to open up the game, but the passing was faulty-r-generally lobbed. Once Wellington was unfortunate in. not scoring, but the same position came Canterbury’s way a little later.’ln the closing five minutes of the game Canterbury again did most of the-at-tacking, after 'having displayed a sterling defence during Wellington’s, onslaughts. There iyas no score in the spell and the game ended in Canterbury’s favour, 6—o. Mr. A. C. Kitto refereed.
