I THE RACING WORLD

EGMONT MEETING Omeo Wins Steeplechase R. REED’S DOUBLE (By Telegraph—From "The Watcher.” , Hawera, May 7. The Egmont Racing Club’s winter meeting concluded to-day in fine, cold weather; the track was in good order. The attendance was fair, and speculation a little better than on the opening day, probably due to the fact that the favourites did better.

Omeo won the steeplechase, and the principal flat events fell to Ridgeiuount and Merry Damon, both ridden by R. Reed. Copey and Call Again fell In the steeplechase, but the riders were unhurt. The totalisator handled £9060, compared with £18,3-10/10/- on the second day last year. The total for the meeting was £17,535, against £36,379, a decrease of £18,844. Flags were flown at half-mast In memory of Mr. A. W. Budge, of Stratford, formerly of Hawera, and Mr. W. J. Llnklorn, a member of the club, who died last night after attending the first day’s races. Mr. Budge was a life-member of the club, and was closely associated with racing in Taranaki. Deceased bred his own horses, the best-known in recent years being Yoma. Hot Favourite Opens Ball.

Wallaruh, a hot favourite for the hack sprint, scored decisively. Orby’s Choice, Singer, and Goldzone led him to the straight, where he came through and won by a length and a half. Singer, who beat Derry Belle, was half a length away, and Ktssless was fourth. Then came Royal Bengal, Royal Routine and Orby’s Choice. Wallaruh had a nice run, cantering down the straight. Kissless looks improved. Double for Zippor. Zippor repeated his first day’s performance in the hurdles, going to the front after his first fence, and staying there. He did not jump quite so well as ho did yesterday, but Callapat, who trailed him all the way, was unable to get nearer than six or seven lengths at the finish. Pangolin' finished better than the rest for third, four lengths further back, with Callamart fourth, then Firte Acre and Bennanee. Zippor never was in danger. Fine Acre finished on from a long way back. Benuaneo will come right with experience. True to Form. Cross-country horses ran true to form in the Adamson Steeplechase with the exception that a substantial improvement by Nukumai saw him divide Omeo and Blrkbeck at the finish. Omeo and Nukumai were always in front, and Omeo drew away to finish six lengths, ahead of Nukumai, who beat Blrkbecl? by two lengths. Aurora Borealis was fourth, than Kowhatu, Kaokaorao and Winter Day. Copey fell at the fence at the straight entrance the first time, aud Call Agalu smashed through the wing of the next obstacle. Omeo made one faulty jump early, but afterward was always going well. Nukumai shaped much better than usual. Birkbeck ran well, and was -'finishing' on. Aurora Borealis made a bold showing, but stifled the sod wall on both rounds, which knocked her back. The others were outclassed. Unexpected Happens. Awaken was a red-hot pot in the open sprint, but the unexpected happened. Ridgemount got well out of the barrier, and could never be caught. He had the others flat out all the way. Awaken finished strongly, but failed by a length and a half to reach Ridgemount. Gold Dawn was a neck fivay third, then Cuticle and Blue Paper. Awaken’s backers jvere distinctly unlucky. It was impossible from the start for him to overcome the initial handicap.

Dead-heat in Hack Scurry.

Leisure finished.' up a hot order in the hack scurry, but after having every chance she could only divide honours with Manifesto, and her backers received tea money. Leisure was first out, but dropped in behind Crimestor and Moatoa to the straight, with Manifesto further back. Leisure challenged, and had Crlmcstor beaten at the last half furlong. Here Manifesto camo with a strong run, and. got up to dead-beat, with Crlmcstor a length away, then Miss Chatter, Moatoa, and Arvada.

Manifesto was going very fast at the finish, and would have won in another stride.

Merry Damon Well. Merry Damon, favourite for the Davidson Handicap, put up a fine performance to win, as ho had to get up through a big bunch from the entrance to the straight.

Hopwood made the pace from Silvermine'; ShVewd, Calamine and Paltonu. then Merry Damon on the rails. Little Doubt and Richfield moved round the field on the turn, but the order into line was practically the same as in tlie runging.. Hopwood, Silvermine, Calamine and Paltonu were in line at the last furlong. Merry Damon then dashed up, scoring by' a head from Calamine, who beat Richfield by half a length. Shrewd was fourth, then Paltonu, Hopwood, and Silvermine. The winner is back to his best form. Calamine’s showing was a surprise. Silvermine had every chance, but he cannot carry weight. Nightmare scored a comfortable win In the concluding event. She got out well, settled down In behind Miss Shef to the straight, and then won easily by two lengths. Miss Shef, who had been hunted along in front, stopped badly, and was cut out of second money by a length by Malahat. Merry Melody was fourth, then Banbridge and Crenna Town. The pace set by Miss,Shef had the field well strung out. The "winner stayed on well, showing much Improvement on Marton form. Malahat also finished well.
