PERMIAN LAUNCHED

Sister-ship to Brunswick

The Scotts’ Shipbuilding and Engineering Co., Ltd., Greenock, launched on January 31 last, the Permian, a sister ship to the Atlantic Union Oil Company's Dieselelectrjc tanker Brunswick, which is due at Wellington early next week from San Pedro, via Auckland. The Permian is the third tanker to be built fey this company for the Atlantic Refining Co., Philadelphia, the second, the Winkler, being a smaller vessel.

The Permian is 469 ft. in length with a breadth of 63ft., and has g gross tonnage of 8950. The vessel has been constructed on the Isherwood longitudinal system of framing to carry 14,200 tons of spirit oil on a light draught. The deck equipment and oil-pumping installation are electrically operated, and Sperry Gyro compasses and sleeving apparatus are installed. All the accommodation is situated in and on the poop, the crew being in two-berth rooms on the upper deck, and the officers and engineers in houses above; while all the navigating arrangements are situated above the officers’ hous£. The Dieselelectric propelling machinery Is fitted aft, and is the same as that installed in the Brunswick. The prime m.overs consist of four single-acting, four-stroke cycle, airless injection Diesel engines of the Cavels-Ingersoll-Rand type. Each has six cylinders and is designed to give an output of 800 b.h.p. at 225 r.p.m. Each engine is directly coupled at the after end to one main and one auxiliary electric generator. The main generators, each of 600 kw. capacity, work in series at 250 volts, and supply current at 100 Q volts to the main propelling motor, which Is of the doublearmature type and designed to transmit about 2800 s.h.p. at 95 r.p.m. to the propeller. The propelling motor is controlled from the pilot house on the bridge. This feature puts the movements of the vessel entirely In the hands of the deck officers. The complete electrical Installation, including the motors for the auxiliaries, has been supplied by the British ThomsonHouston Co., Ltd., Rugby.

WAINUI LEAVES MELBOURNE. The Union Company has received cabled advice that the Wainui left Melbourne at 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday for Bluff, Dunedin, Lyttelton and Wellington. She is due here on May 14, and will leave again on May 16 for Melbourne, via Bluff.

WAIKOUAITI AT BLUFF. The Union Company’s Walkoualti, from Newcastle, Sydney and Hobart, reached Bluff yesterday morning. She was to have left there again last night for Dunedin, Lyttelton, Timaru and Oamaru, to complete discharge. THE KALINGO. The Union Company advises that the Kallngo left Sydney yesterday for Newcastle to load coal for Miramar. REMUERA’S MOVEMENTS. The New Zealand Shipping Company s liner Remuera was to have left Bluff at 6 p.m. yesterday for Lyttelton, to continue her homeward loading. She is due at Wellington next Tuesday morning for further loading, and will later proceed to Auckland to fill up. The Remuera is scheduled to clear Auckland finally on May 23 for Southampton and London, via the Panama Canal. , DEVON’S ALTERED ITINERARY. The. Federal Company advises that the Devon, which is due at Wanganui this morning from Port Chalmers to continue her homeward loading, will now complete at Opua, Auckland and Wellington. The vessel is now due here on May 21, and is

scheduled to clear this port finally on May 23 for London, Avonmouth, Liverpool and Glasgow, via Montevideo. TONGARIRO DELAYED. The Federal Company advises that the Tongariro is now due at Wellington on Sunday morning from Timaru to complete her homeward loading. She is scheduled to clear this port finally next Wednesday for London, Avonmouth, Liverpool and Glasgow, via the Panama Canal. THE CANADIAN CRUISER. Canadian National Steamships have received cabled advice that the Canadian Cruiser, en route from Halifax to Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Australian ports, cleared Balboa on Tuesday. She is due at Auckland about June 2, and here five days later. THE COPTIC. The Shaw, Savill motor-ship Coptic is scheduled to leave Liverpool to-morrow for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin.
