FISHING SEASON

Now Nearing the End

GOOD SPORT CONTINUES

Anglers experienced in the waters of the Rotorua and Taupo fisheries agree that May—the last month of the fishing season —is the time for the big trout. Fishermen have not been disappointed this season, for, according to official reports received by the Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle, fish weighing over 51b. have been caught frequently recently, giving those handling rods very good sport. Fly fishing for five days in Lake Rotoiti an angler landed 30 fine-conditioned fish of a total weight of 1291 b. His best catch was made on May 2, and it consisted of 14 fish (one being a 6-pounder), turning the scales at 581 b. At Lake Tarawera some splendid specimens of trout had been taken, several registering over 71b. “The runs of fish,” says the conservator in his reports, “have been splendid, and anglers have been delighted with them. Thie famous fishing ground—the Tongariro River —has kept up its reputation by continuing to let fishermen have six and nine-pounders'. At time of reporting, however, the launeh parties trolling on the lakes have had only fair sport, due to the weather, but from now onwards until the end of the season better results should be obtained. Surveying the season generally, I think it has been a good one from both the standpoint of the fly fisherman and the troller.” ,
