CITY MAYORALTY

Mr. Hislop Returned

MAJORITY, 1804

It was just after 10 p.m. when the retiring Mayor, Mr. G. A. Troup, addressing a small assembly in the Town Hall, announced that the final figures were: —

HISLOP, T. C. A. .. 13,089 LUCKIE, M. F 11,285

Majority for Hislop 1,804

Mr. Troup said it was clear that Mr. Hislop had a sufficient’ majority to ensure his return, and as retiring Mayor he had great pleasure in congratulating him on his achievement. Mr. Hislop thanked the electors, saying he was aware of the great responsibility that had been conferred upon him. He was prepared to accept it, and to attempt to carry through the policy which he had laid down during the campaign. He and his opponent had been friends for years, and at the end of the campaign were as good friends as they were at the beginning. There had been no suggestion of personalities, and the fight had been a straight one. He regretted that he would not have the assistance of Mr. Luckie as a councillor in carrying out the duties which would devolve upon him. While the vote was in some measure a tribute to himself, it was also a tribute to those who had gone Before him and whose name he had the honour to bear. He hoped to prove worthy of the confidence shown in him. Mr. Luckie thanked the electors who had supported him so wonderfully. He felt that he had justified his action in contesting the Mayoralty, and he had no regrets. The contest had been fought in an excellent spirit and the better man had won. He had no hesitation in congratulating Mr. Hislop upon his very fine victory, and lie also congratulated 'lie city upon having a man who was a worthy son of a worthy sire. Mr. Luckie said he had served the city for some years and might sometime in the future have the opportunity of serving it again. Mr. Hislop would be a worthy successor to the man who had filled the office for the last four years. .He would need all the assistance and ’ support he could get, from the council to carrj out the duties as Mr. Trotip had done. Hearty cheers were given both for the new Mayor and Mayoress and also for Councillor Luckie. CITY COUNCIL Mr. Mitchell Loses His Seat MR. APPLETON TOPS POLL All the members of the old City Council who offered themselves for re-election, with one exception, were returned. The exception is Mr. G.
