MR. HISLOP’S DECISIVE WIN

Wellington City Elects a New Mayor

SITTING COUNCILLORS GENERALLY POLL WELL Success of New Hospital Board Ticket LABOUR LOSES SEAT ON HARBOUR BOARD By a majority of 1804, Mr. T. G. A. Hislop, the Civic League and Ratepayers’ Association candidate, was elected Mayor of Wellington vesterdav, defeating Mr. Martin Luckie, who stood as an Independent. It is estimated that only about 50 per cent, of those eligible cast their votes in the city'for the Mayoralty, City Council, Hospital Board and Harbour Board candidates. Mr. Hislop polled 13,089 votes, and Mr. Luckie 11285. It was anticipated that the contest for the Mayoralty would be close, and this was borne out by the periodic returns. Mr. Hislop did not secure a certain majority until the greater part of the count had been completed, although when 60 of the 66 returns had been received his election was assured. Nothing of outstanding interest marked the local body elections throughout the province. Polling was carried out in Wellington in showery weather, and this, no doubt, kept many from the booths. Voting took place between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., but results came through exceptionally slowly during the evening, and it was not until after .two o’clock this morning that the final results were made known. Nine members of the City Council sought re-eleetiou and eight were returned/ Mr. G. Mitchell being the unsuccessful sitting member. The membership of the Council, excluding the Mayor, is 15, so that there will be seven new councillors. Although there were 13 Labour candidates' out of the total of 35, only three were elected, all being sitting members. The City Council poll was headed by Er. Will Appleton, who secured 12,510 votes, only 579 fewer than the total polled by Mr. Hislop. Mr. W. Hj Bennett was second on the poll with 12,434 votes, and Mr. W. J. Gaudin was third with 12,379. No women were elected to the Council, although there were two candidates. Special interest attached to the Hospital Board election, owing to the presence of -a ticket headed by Dr. It. Campbell Begg, advocating thorough reorganisation. Dr. Begg actually drew the greatest number of votes of, the day, securing a total of 15,321, or 2232 more than Mr. Hislop. Dr. McDonald Wilson was second on the Hospital Board poll, securing 14,183 votes, the other candidates supporting the policy of reform also being successful. There were 31 candidates for the 14 seats on theBoard, and of these nine out of ten sitting members who stood were reflected, Including Mr. F. Castle, the present chairman. Out of 12 women who sought election four were returned. For the four city seats on the Harbour Board there were nine candidates. A sitting member, Mr. H. D. Bennett, topped this poll with 11,849 votes. ■ " A new member is Mr. G. A. Troup, the retiring Mayor, who was third on the poll. Sitting members Were returned for the other two qeats. By displacing Mr. C. H. Chapman on the Harbour Board, Mr. Troup brought abOut the only defeat of a sitting Labour member at the polls. - .
