SPANISH UPRISING

LOYALTY TO ALFONSO

Republic’s Forces Prevail

OFFICIALS ACT SWIFTLY

By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.

London, May 5.

Bitter fighting occurred between the Spanish Foreign. Legion and Spanish infantry near Tetuan, Morocco. The Legionaries, who remained loyal to Alfonso, paraded the streets near the official residence of the High Commissioner, carrying Royalist flags.

They were instantly opposed by infantry, who overpowered them. There were many casualties before the Royalists were disarmed and marched back to their barracks.

Mutiny at the Legion’s headquarters at Dar Riffen followed immediately, the Legionaries overpowering their officers and locking them in cells. The High Commissioner ordered three infantry regiments from Ceuta. They surrounded Dar Riffen and shots were exchanged. Further reinforcements were necessary before the Legionaries surrendered.

The mutiny greatly excited the natives of Tetuan, where - a general strike was declared. Demonstrators broke the Residency windows and pillaged European shops. Native cavalry failed to disperse the rioters, and street fighting is progressing.'

SINCERE EX-KING

Loyalty to New Republic

Madrid, May 5.

The proprietor of the Monarchist newspaper “ABC” went to London and interviewed the ex-King Alfonso, who said:

“I have decided to place no difficulties in the way of the Republican Government. I want everybody to know, whether Monarchist or Republican, and whether a twisted Interpretation is given to my words, that I am sincere. "My future conduct will prove my loyalty. Monarchists fishing to fulfil my wishes must be patriotic. I have not abdicated the rights of the Crown, which belong *to my ancestors and descendants."
