Famous Aviator Injured

BOMBING PLANE CRASHES

Official Wireless. Rugby, May 5. Flight-Lieutenant H. R. D. Waghorn, the famous winner of the Schneider Trophy, and a civilian observer named Alexander, were seriously injured in a parachute landing at Farnborough, Hants, to-day. . Their machine, an experimental bomber, was flying at 2000 feet when it entered a spin and apparently got oug of control. Waghorn and his companion jumped out with their parachutes when the machine was quite close to the ground. The machine crashed at a great speed some distance away and was completely wrecked. Waghorn suffered a fractured thigh and ankle and head injuries, and was undergoing an operation tg.-night.

Flying-Officer H. R. D. Waghorn won the Schneider Trophy in 1929, with a speed of 328 miles an hour, and a fastest lap speed of 331 m.p.h. Later he was decorated with the Air Force Cross in recognition of his victory.
