Plea for National Art Union

Sir, —If the fusion of the United and Reform parties comes to bp. one wonders if the new party will have sufficient courage to tap a source of revenue hitherto untouched. I refer to sweepstakes. For the last few years one art union has followed another with constant regularity; therefore if the country can sanction these, why not take the bull by the horns mid create a national art union for the benefit of the country? The Consolidated Fund will benefit to the extent of at least £50.000 from this source. Then having done this, give effect to MrArmstrong’s Bill, and license and control all wagering on horse-racing. A quarter of a million would be derived from this source. Heretofore no member has had the courage to attempt to bring a Bill of this nature before Parliament, and Mr. Armstrong is to be complimented in his effort to get revenue from a source which will hurt no one. May he be successful even if he does belong to a minority party. ■ - SOUND FINANCE. Wellington. May 2.
