THE RACING WORLD

’CHASING SEASON OPENS \ Egmont Meeting WIN FOR BIRKBECK Paitonu Takes Flat Event KOPJE FALLS & BREAKS NECK ' Dominion Special Service. Ilawcra,' May 6. The steeplcchasiug season opened at Hawera to-day, when the first day o£ the Egmont Racing Club’s winter meeting was held. The weather was fine, but cold and bleak, and the track -was In first-class order. The attendance was only moderate. Some good racing, with close finishes, was witnessed, and there were one or two outstanding surprises. Blrkbeck won the Egmont Steeples while the principal flat races fell to Orapai and Paitonu. There was only one serious fall during the day, M. Moran, rider of Plain Jane in the Hack Steeples, dislocating a shoulder. f The totalisator investments were £8475, compared with £18,039/10/- for eight races last year. Decisive Win. Zippor scored a very decisive win in the hurdles. He ran to the front after crossing the first fence, and was soon clear of Callapat, Callamart, Moerangi and Nucleus. The further they went the more certain it became that Zippor had to fall to lose. He got in too close to the last . fence and nearly unseated his rider, who lost his Irons, but still, won by six or seven lengths. Moerangi outstayed Callamart and beat him home by a head. Callapat was right up fourth, then the favourite Nucleus and Orazone and Bennanee next,, well back. Bar the one mistake, Zippor gave a great exhibition over his fences and was always a winner. Nucleus never looked likely. Bennanee jumped very badly. Tight Finish. There was a terrific finish in the Hack Sprint, four horses going across the line locked together. Victory rested with the outsider, Derry Belle, over the favourite Orby’s Choice. Manifesto, got a fly out.of the tapes and, joined by Crimestor, they made the pace well clear of Moatoa, Orby’s Choice and Singer. Manifesto ran very wide into line, so did Singer, leaving Crimestor clear. Orby’s Choice then challenged Singer, withDerry Belle putting in a great run from the rear. Gray had Orby’s Choice in front until the very last stride, when Derry Belts headed him oft, heads also separating Orby’s Choice, Singer and Crimestor. Then came Koyal Bengal, Miss Shef and Goldzone. 1 As the race was run Singer should have won, but the merit of Derry Belle’s performance was undeniable. Gray made superhuman efforts to land the favourite, but he just failed. Crimestor carried Sjlb. overweight. He improved on his Marton form, and should soon win. Fell with Furlong Lead. Kopje was winning the Hack Steeplechase by a furlong when he fell at the second last fence and broke his neck. This, left his stablemate (unbracketed) Winter Day in front with Kaokaoroa bandy. Winter Day tvon by two lengths from the favourite Kowhatu, who finished with a strong run. Call Again jujt beat Kaokaoroa for third, five lengths further back. Then, a long way off, came Day Lass and Fiduciary. Plain Jane fell very early in the race. Kopje only had to stand up to win, and the others who finished in the money were lucky. At the same time the winner, who is owned by his trainer, gave a good display of jumping. Kowhatu was a long way back early, but finished well. Kaokoaroa is capable of improvement. Moran, rider of Plain Jane (dislocated shoulder) and Skipper, rider of Kopje (concussion) were taken to hospital.

Blrkbeck Again.

Copey looked the winner of the Egmont Steeplechase for thq greater part of the journey, but Birkbcck joined him at the last fence, and beat him decisively in the run home.

■ Nukumai and Copey, from Omco and Blrkbeck, then Fine Acre and Aurora Borealis, was the order f6r a mile and a half. Then Copey took charge, and although challenged by Omco three fences from home, shook him off. Blrkbeck then moved up, and jumping the last fence on terms, beat Copey home by just over a length. Aurora Borealis was four lengths away, with Omco handy; then Nukumai and Fine Acre.

Both Omco and Aurora Borealis were preferred to the winner on the machine. Omeo had every chance; he ran and jumped well, and will be improved by the race. The winner is also likely to Improve. He was always going well, and jumped perfectly. Aurora Borealis lay well back in the first two miles and finished strongly, but never looked like getting up, weight anchoring her at the finish. Copey looks a possibility for an early steeplechase. Nukumai ran a fair race. Some of his jumping was faulty. Fino Acre showed promise, jumping the majority of the fences particularly well. The announcement of his death the previous day was an error. It was Paiko, his stablemate, who dropped dead. It has thus not been a very fortunate week for A. M. Wright, although he did win a race to-day, as he has lost the services of both Paiko and Kopje. Won Well. Orapai, favourite for the Flying Handicap, scored an impressive win. He was first out and, joined by Bidgemount, led early from Chief Link, Blue Paper, Gold Dawn and Richfield. Bidgemount dropped in behind, and Richfield moved up. Orapai led into the straight from Chief Link, Blue Paper, Richfield and Ridgemount. Orapai hold his place and won by a short length from Ridgemount, who beat Richfield by a neck Royal Finance was fourth, followed by Chief Link, Gold Dawn, Hopwood and Cuticle. Orapai won very comfortably. There was not much between the next four or five for second place. Royal Finance came from a long way back. Cuticle dropped her rider (McDowell) in the preliminaries; he was replaced by MacDonald. McDowell was taken to hospital with concussion. Double for Gray. Gray rode the winning flat double when he brought home Paitonu in the Mcßae Memorial Handicap. The winner was always handily placed, going well. Kawakina made the pace from Shrewd, Calamine, Paitonu, Bright Glow and Chopin, with Black Duke tailing off. Shrewd had charge at the half, and they closed up on him, Shrewd and Paitonu leading him into the straight from Calamine and Merry Damon. Paitonu had the race won a furlong from home, but Merry Damon, Shrewd and Black Duke all closed on him at the finish. Paitonu won by a neck from Merry Damon, with Shrewd and Black Duke heads away; then came Calamine, Chopin and Kawhakina. Paitonu could have won by a greater margin had Gray ridden him out. Merry Damon is improving. Shrewd and Black Duke both finished well. Chopin was disappointing. Bright Glow finished last. Rank Outsider. Malahat started favourite for the Awhitl Hack, but after having every chance he could only finish sixth. The race was won by the rankest outsider of the day, Gasnapper. The start was very poor, Corwen, Tentcall, Bon Eve and Banbridge ■ losing all chance. Malahat was always near the front, but Gasnappcr took charge at the half and was never caught. Takahue, Crenna Town and Little Doubt came at him in the straight, but he held on to win by a neck, Takahue beating Crenna Town I>J’ a head. Little Doubt was right up fourth, then Merry Melody, Malahat and Green Patch. Takahue and Crenna Town were crowded when looking for an opening and appeared

TROTTING Marlborough Meeting To-day A REVIEW OF THE CARD (By “Overcheck.") The Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting will be held to-day. The acceptances arc satisfactory except in two races, and the racing should be interesting. The programme is as follows: —

TRIAL HANDICAP, of 50 sovs.; 3.45 class. One mile and a half. Eastern Queen scr Bingen Wilkes 30 Arthur Chimes 12 Teri Kingi .... GO

In the Trial Handicap Eastern Queen and Teri Kingi may do best. The former ran second to Murchimes at Nelson, going 3.35 1-5. Teri Kingi won over ten furlongs in 2.51 1-5, equal to about 3.2 G at twelve furlongs. He may be favourite.

STEWARDS’ HANDICAP, of 50 sors.; z unhoppled trotters only; 3.51 class. One mile and a-half. Hurst Park .. scr Effigy 60

Wikitoria, Effigy, and Arthur may be in most demand in the Stewards’ Handicap. The two first-named finished in the order given behind Wah at Nelson, and now meet the latter on better terms. Arthur Thorpe has three placed performances to his credit this season. Wikitoria may be favourite.

MARLBOROUGH CUP, of 110 sovs.; 4.50

In the Marlborough Cup Lifebuoy, who won at Nelson in 4.37, Dan Roco, who was third, and Radiola, may have the largest following. As Dan Roco now meets Lifebuoy on 12 yards better terms for a length defeat, he may secure the major portion of the stake on this occasion.

DISTRICT HANDICAP, of 50 sovs.; 3.45

Hone Heke ran second In a mile race at Westland in January, going 2.23. He may prove equal to defeating Kodlc at a difference of 24 yards.

HORSE’S GEAR CHANGED

Trotting Board’s Decision

By Telegraph—Press Association

Christchurch, May 6.

At a meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Board, correspondence was received from the Marlborough Racing Club concerning a change of gear on Lifebuoy.

It was stated that in the first race a portion of Lifebuoy's bridle broke and that for the Awatere Trotting Handicap the horse was equipped with a wool shadow blind to prevent too much movement. The club, on the application of the owner of the second horse, had withheld the stakes for that race, which Lifebuoy won. It was decided to reply that the stipendiary steward was the only official who could give permission for a change of gear, that the only penalty that could be inflicted on the first horse was a fine, and that the stakes should be paid over.

Hawke’s Bay Meeting. Nominations for the Hawke’s Bay Trotting Club’s meeting, to bo held on June 3, will close with the secretary, Mr. A. E. Palmer, at Hastings, on Thursday next, May 14. at 8 p.m.
