RUMOUR OF FIGHTING
Portuguese Denial Issued i» MADEIRA BISHOP’S OFFER (Rec. April 30, 7.30 p.m.) ' Lisbon, April 30. The departure of a hospital ship to Madeira caused rumours of sanguinary fighting, but the Government stated tonight that there was no fighting. Operations have been suspended owing to the Bishop of Funchal’s mediation. An earlier message from Madeira stated that the Minister of Marine, commanding the punitive expedition, had refused the Bishop of Funchal’s offer to act as mediator, declaring that nothing but unconditional -irrender was acceptable. Further Lisbon messages state that a serious student movement against President Carmona’s dictatorship Is developing in the universities throughout the country. At Lisbon students rioted and hoisted the Red Flag. At Oporto tlie students barred themselves in tlie School of Medicine, and resisted tlie police. Finally they rushed out, some climbing down scaffolding, which -collapsed. One was killed and nineteen injured.
