EAST COAST RAILWAY
Construction Continues NO REPAIR WORK Nothing has yet been done toward repairing the damage which was done on the East Coast railway by the earthquake, twisted rails and slips con tinuing to remain as they have been since February 3, says the “Hawke’s Bay Herald " It is said that it will cost £50,000 to make good the damage, but in the present period of financial stress it does not seem likely that anything will be done in the near future. Past Putorino —that is, the portion of the line which is still in the hands of the Public Works Department and has not yet been taken over by the Railway Department—work is proceeding as it was before the earthquake, there being hardly any let-up on it at any stage.
