Mayoral Election and the Wages Question

Sir, —In your report of Mr. Martin Luckie's meeting held in St. Thomas’s Hall last night you state: “That he was opposed to any steps that would involve • reduction in wages or salaries of members of the corporation staff, whether under tho awards or not.’’ Now, Sir, this is a very misleading statement. What Mr. Luckie did say was: “He hoped that there would not be any need for reduction in wages or salaries, but if the Arbitration Court did reduce rate of wages of workers working under awards, and in consequence the council made any readjustment, then the whole of the staff that was not governed by award wages should participate in the readjustment, including his Worship the Mayor.” As I was at the meeting, and can vouch for what Mr. Luckie stated, I hope you will, in fairness to Mr. Luckie, publish this letter. —I am, etc., T. R. BOYES. Wellington, April 29.
