Strong Punitive Force Prepares for Attack SURRENDER DEMAND By Telegraph—Frees Assn.—Copyright. London, April 26. Perfect order reigns at Funchal (Madeira), but grave apprehension. The rebels are hurriedly erecting sandbags and breastworks in view of an expected attack by the punitive expedition. The leaders are demanding liberty and the reinstatement of Parliament, They declare that the island is ready to fight, but unwilling to begin hostilities.
Lisbon’s auxiliary cruiser Nyassa is going to Madeira, taking the third contingent of troops. Two seaplanes are expected to arrive at the Porte Santo base for the operations of April 27, when the Government concentration will be complete. The Minister of War will deliver an ultimatum to the rebels from seaplanes, demanding unconditional surrender within a few hours. If the ultimatum is rejected a bombardment, assisted by a seaplane, will begin.
