ESCAPED GALLOWS
Impulsive Sydney Murderer (Rec. April 27, 9 p.m.) Sydney, April 27. The State Cabinet commuted to life imprisonment the death sentence on Leonard Grewcock for the murder of William Thompson in December. Described as “an inoffensive, decent citizen,” a New Zealander named Thompson, aged 30, a native of Wellington, when going home along a lane at Campsie on December 6, was viciously struck with a gaspipe and eventually died from a fractured skull. At the time of arrest Grewcock was under the influence of liquor. According to his statement something seemed to say to him, “Kill this .” Thompson happened to be the unfortunate person passing at the moment of the impulse.
