THE RACING WORLD

Whangarei and Nelson Fixtures

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “The Watcher.”)

Acceptances for the first day of the Egmont Racing Club’s winter meeting, to be held on Wednesday and Thursday, May 6 and 7, will close on Friday at 5.30 p.m.

There will be racing on ■ Thursday and Saturday at Whangarei and Nelson, and on Saturday at Marton and Riccarton.

With six in the Flying Handicap, the smallest field at Marton on Saturday, the club has an excellent card to present to its patrons.

Rabbi, who was reported to be doing well enough to make his reappearance at Nelson, is not in the list of acceptors, nor is he among the nominations for the Marlborough meeting. The inference is fairly obvious.

The Opakl owner-trainer, B. Burgess, will take his team to Nelson this week, and go on to Marlborough.

First Acre's nomination for Kelson was of a • complimentary nature, but he has been accepted for in two events the first day. . Racing Across the Straits.

Trentham will as usual have a fair contingent racing at Nelson and Marlborough. At Nelson on Thursday A. Goodman has Lady Rene, Black Mint, The Dove, Courtlikc, Dainty Ways, and White Doe engaged; H. Pritchard has Shootist, Gold Sand, Fallow and Royal Game; C. Pritchard has Invite, Taura Lad and The Sun; and D. McAuley will have Peep. Winloch and Arlkinul are other Trentham horses, engaged at Marlborough. Exit Lineage.

Lineage, who met a violent death through collision with a motor-car at Trentham on Saturday, was a three-year-old chestnut filly by Leighton from Merit, and was bred by her owner, Mr. V. Riddiford, who imported Merit from England. As a two-year-old Lineage showed promise of developing into a smart performer, for she won the Avondale Stakes early in her career. Subsequently, however, her form proved disappointing, and her only other success was a minor handicap at Woodville in the autumn. Her Only other time in the money was third in the Challenge Stakes at Riccarton, and in eight starts she won £520. This season she continued her run of moderate form, and her only success was at the Wairarapa Easter meeting. Prior to that she had run three thirds, filling that position in both the Wanganui and Avondale Guineas. She had won this season £2OO, making £BlO in all. For part of the season she had to be turned out owing to an attack of bleeding at the Auckland spring meeting. She bled off and on since returning to work, but always showed exceptional brilliancy in her trials. Lineage,' however, was on the small side, and at a disadvantage when racing in a crowded field. A post-mortem revealed a slightly enlarged heart, which may have accounted for her failures to run up to expectations. The actual cause of death was a ruptured liver, caused by the accident. Red Fuchsia’s Weight.

Presuming that 10.7,. the weight telegraphed from Auckland, as Red Fuchsia's handicap in..the Egmont Steeplechase, is correct, he is probably well treated. He has certainly contested and won only one steeplechase, a hack event at Marton. In September, 1929, but on that occasion he carried 12.0; and made a job of his opponents. His consistent and first-class form over hurdles, coupled with.this showing. made Mr. Macmanemin give him 11.5 in the Autumn Steeplechase at Ellerslie at Easter.last year. He ran third to OmeO and Kauri Park, both 9.9. This form made Mr. Coyle assess him at 11.3, equal topweight with Nukuinai, for the Wanganui Steeplechase, and for the Great Northern Steeples he was given 11.0, having only two above him in the handicap. Red Fuchsia was unable to start in either of these races, as he had gone wrong, his third to Omco at Easter last year having been his last race until just recently, when he reappeared on the flat at Feilding. There is no doubt that he has been given an exceptional opportunity at Egmont. Well-bred Novice.

Among the novices in H. Nurse’s team is a two-year-old by Weathervane from Stardancer, and thus a half-brother to some smart performers, including .Starland, Limelight, Paperchase, and Starsliooter. He was first given the name of Cockadoodieddo, but this has been changed to Metal Bird. He has shown some speed in his work, and he may be given a race in the Novice Stakes, at the Amberley-Horo-rata meeting on Saturday. Applies Everywhere.

The well-known American racing man. W. S. Vosburgh, lias no illusions concerning the breeding or buying of racehorses, and the following remarks made by him in the 1 Lexington “Thoroughbred Record” 9ppl.V to most countries as well as America:—“From an experience of a lifetime it often occurs to me tiiat in matters concerning the breeding,, selection and racing of horses, for which men arc often

given the credit of knowing a great deal, there are no subjects of which they know so little. The mistakes of horsemen,_ whether owners, trainers or breeders, will fill volumes. It is fair to suppose that a trainer constantly associated with horses is in a better position to speak of the chances of a horse for a race than anybody. Yet, it is frequently remarked that ‘a trainer’s tips would break a bank.’ .... That men should make mistakes is not so strange after all. Racing and the breeding of racehorses are too involved—too complex. Owners and trainers become 'stable blind’ as regards their own horses, and blind to the excellence of other men’s horses. Breeders allow themselves to become the worst kind of theorists. In the purchase of yearlings men are given the credit of ’good judgment,’ when good luck would seem more deserving.” WHANGAREI MEETING Auckland Horses Going Dominion Special Service. Auckland, April 27. The Whangarei meeting will attract a large number of horses from Ellerslie and Takanini. Eaglet and Grand Tea are the early fancies for the Mclnnes Memorial Handicap, and Lady’s Boy and Paganelli for the Stewards’ Handicap. Chief Joy was sore on Monday, and it is doubtful if he will make the trip. Track conditions may alter the form on Thursday, but at present there seems a reasonable chance of the track being fairly good. Land Measure and Owalraka are to make their debut over hurdles at Whangarei. The former has schooled well, but little is known of Owalraka’s ability. He is a good stamp that has only to jump decently to be dangerous. J. Lambess is working Royal Step, a twb-year-old by Weathervane —Dame Winkle, and a likely sort. Tanerlrl and Maori Boy are two mudlarks who should be dangerous during the winter, but both had their preparations stepped, and may nftt be ready for Whangarei.
