COMING OF AGE

■ . i Miss Hilda Kirkley Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Wauchop gave a most delightful dance at the Adelphi Cabaret on Thursday night, on the occasion of the twenty-first birthday of their daughter. Miss Hilda Kirkley. Over eighty guests were entertained, Mr. And Mrs. Wauchop receiving them in the small lounge, where they were presented to the guest of honour. The cabaret looked more than usually pretty, having large bowls -and vases of lavender pink and wino scabious everywhere. Dancing took place in the lefthand ballroom, which had been especially enclosed. Mrs. Wauchop wore a long sweeping black ring velvet frock with a one-sided flare lined with white satin. A large egg pearl choker finished the toilette. Aliss Hilda Kirkley’s froek of ricJi pearl satin' was simply draped to the figure with inverted flat side drapes, and it was finished by a spray of snow white lily-of-the-valley. ' ... Several new novelties were introduced into the dancing, which enabled everybody to meet each other. It was noticed that a great many of the musical and dramatic world as well as the artistic world were present. ■ . , Supper was served in the extra lounge room bn three long tables, which were decorated With pink scabious favours and wonderful caps, baskets of red roses, gifts to Miss Kirkley. Over the end table where the guest or hoiiour sat hung a large gold kej- with “21” on it. The birthday cake, which came from “Josephine,”, in Christchurch, was a work of Art. Embedded in a mound of red roses, it presented a fine example of decorative work. Pale pink icing surmounted by twenty-one pale pink candles revealed on its surface a red and brown house with a lifelike young girl in pale green walking toward it. There was also a key, and a sundial with “May all your hours be sunny ones” on it. Captain Webb, an old friend of the family, proposed the toast of the evening, which was drunk with everyone Standing. They then Sang “For She’s A Jolly Good Fellow.” „ x .
