ASSOCIATION PUZZLED Lack of Co-operation The negotiations between the Wellington Ratepayers’ Association and the Civic League concerning a combined ‘ticket for the municipal elections were explained last evening by Mr. H. Miller, president of the association. He said a jointconference between the two bodies had agreed by secret ballot that the following twelve names should be included on the joint ticket: Messrs. W. 11. Bennett, J. Burns, W. Duncan, T. Forsyth, W. J. Gan din, H. A. Huggins, C. Lethaby, J. McDonald, H. Price, J. D. Sievwright, R. A. Wright, and F. Fanning, the two last named having since retired. ; Since the conference the Ratepayers Association waited upon and received the consent to nomination of Mr. Will Appleton, Captain S. Holm, and Mr. Jacob MeEldowney. Mr. J. N. Wallace was also waited upon, but had already consented to nomination by the Civic League, but as his name was quite acceptable to both parties, it brought the agreed list to fourteen names. . , ... As far as the Ratepayers’ Association was concerned, this left one name to be chosen. The ticket would be completed at a later date. . . , . The "object of the association, explained the president, is to nominate men who are prepared to support reduction of rates, open council meetings, no loans (other than health and urgency matters) without prior consent of ratepayers, and investigation into general administration of the council. , The association’s advocacy for a reduction in rates and open council meetings was so popular that the Civic League had come into line on these points, said the president. “This is all to the good,” concluded Mr. Miller, “as the campaign, as far as the association is concerned, will be fought out on policy measures. Frankly speaking, our association ia rather . puzziea by 5 the league's idea of co-operation; but the main thing now is to concentrate upon the return of the very best men tn the various local bodies, and this may very well be left to the good judgment of the electors.”
