St. John Ambulance MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN •Thia year it is the intention of the Wellington Ambulance Division of St. John to teach a sufficient number of prospective new members to bring the strength of the 'division up to approximately 100. An announcement to this effect was made by the superintendent, Mr. S. C. Smith, at the annual meeting on Monday evening. That the St. John Ambulance Brigade was a necessity and a valuable asset to the community was recognised and appreciated by all who were acquainted with the good work it was doing in saving life and limb and alleviating suffering, said the superintendent. He mentioned that during the past three years the members of the men’s division had given 10,570 hours of their own time, absolutely free of charge, in assisting the Free Ambulance in its work. At all Rugby, Soccer and hockey matches members of the division were present to attend to the injured. They also attended at the Speedway, skating rink, athletic meetings, and the races at Trentham. In fact, on —I occasions where the public assembled in numbers members of the division were present to render first aid in cases of accident. “Day after day,” added the superintendent,’ “the forty members of our diviaion are carrying on this work, for which no charge whatever is made, and with one thought being ever paramount in our minds of all, which is expressed in our motto—‘For the Good of Humanity.’” The superintendent thanked the members for the way they rose to the occa»ion during the earthquake, and for the untiring and cheerful manner in which they carried out their arduous duties. Every member, of the division had reported for duty. Fifteen Journeyed to Napier and put in ffoin four to five days attending to the injured and assisting with the transport. All the other members who could not get away spent their spare time assisting with the transport of the injured who were sent to Wellington and in doing duty at the hospital. Many letters and messages of thanks and appreciation were” received from patients, their friends, the medical profession and the authorities. ' The following promotions vyere made: Privates J. Carlsen, H. Rabe and G. Johnston to the rank" of corporal. A vote of thanks was passed to the retiring honorary secretary, Mr. A. 8. Jantke, and Sergeant F. H. Holz was appointed to fill the vacancy.
