MUST STILL WALK Napier’s Tram Service RESTORATION QUESTION Napier, Alarch 18. “Is it likely that the Napier trams will be put into operation again?” was a question asked of Commissioner J. S. Barton, S.M., this motpiing. “It is not in sight,” he replied. _ We are not considering it. I investigated the department’s accounts and learned that the service appeared to be losing about £lOO per week. We are not prepared to pour that amount out from our resources every week. When the population reaches that size where transport is needed, a service will come through private enterprise. Until then walking will continue to be only one of the minor discomforts which must be faced.” The Napier tramways had four miles of track with nine ears running a tenminute service to Port Ahuriri, and two portions of lines on the flats. A staff of 24 was fully employed. The capital cost when the venture started in 1913 was £158,341, which was raised in several loans, many of which will not expire for severul years.
