BACK TO NAPIER Registered Population Advice has been received by Mr. W. E. Barnard, M.P. for Napier, from the earthquake' commissioner in Hawke’s Bay, Mt. J. 8. Barton, S.M., that the present registered population of Napier is 6829. There are many in the town, however, who are unregistered, and are not accounted for in that tptaj. Mr. Barnard stated last evening that 347 pupils were attending the Te Awa School and 144 the Central School, making a total of 491. The necessity for opening a school at Nelson Park or Hasting Street was urgent. HAWKE’S BAY ROADS Auto Association Report The following report on the roads leading from the earthquake area has been submitted by the Manawatu Automobile Association:— , Napier-Taihape.—The Napier-Taihape road is in reasonably good order, and once the earthquake area, in the vicinity of Napier, is left behind, the usual conditions obtain. Napier-Taupo.—The direct road via Eskdale can be used, but there are deviations several chains in length along the railway line, and railway bridges have to be crossed by means of planks. This section of the road is rather tricky for an inexperienced driver. The alternative route, via Greenmeadows, and Rissiugtqn to Te Pohue, is reasonable. The balance of the road from Te Pohue to Taupo is in quite fair order. Napier-Wairoa.—Cars arc now making their way through from Napier to Wairoa. Deviations through paddocks are necessary, and the gorges are negotiated by crossing railway viaducts on planks. The route is very rough, and should not be undertaken except by experienced drivers. Wet weather will render the route impassable. Wairoa-Gisborne.—The main traffic bridge across the Wairoa river is down, but a detour via the railway bridge enables Gisborne to be reached without trouble. « Gisborne-Opotiki.—The Gisborne-Opo-tiki road is in good order. Rotorua via Waikaremoana.—Traffic is now proceeding over this road, but between Wairoa and Lake House a section of the road is continually washing out, and trouble may be experienced at any time. HASTINGS FOOD DEPOT Opposition to Closing At an open-air meeting of workers the question of the proposed closing of the Hastings food depot was brought up, and opinions were expressed that it should be kept open, says the “Tribune.” The meeting consisted of about sixty men. A resolution was passed that a request be made for the Drill Hall to be kept open until such time as the town is back to normal business again. A deputation was appointed to wait on the authorities urging this request. Mr. Arch. Lowe said that it seemed to him a very important thing that the depot should be kept open, although he was not aware if there were any difficulties in the way of keeping it running. o WOMAN’S REMAINS FOUND In Grand Hotel Ruin® By Telegraph—Press Association.
