OCEAN YACHT RACE
Craft Not Yet Reported PROBABLY BECALMED Dominion Special Service. Auckland, March 17. Up till six o’clock this evening no sign has been seen at Cape Maria Van Diemen of the three yachts Teddy, Oiniara and Rangi, which are competitors in a race from Auckland to Sydney. They set out from Auckland on Saturday. The lightkeepers at Cape Maria say the weather is very calm and there is practically no breeze. What wind there was was blowing due south. On arrival at Auckland this morning Captain Prosser, of the Union Company’s steamer Maunganui, said that when his ship was off Cape Maria Van Diemen yesterday afternoon’ the weather was fine and the sea smooth. No sign of the three yachts had been seen, although a sharp look-out had been kept for them for some hours prior to reaching the New Zealand coast as well as round the north and down the east coast. 1 It seems probable that the competitors are becalmed. They should have passed the Cape yesterday afternoon if sailing conditions had been normal. Everything points to the fact that the race will take longer than was at first anticipated.
