OBITUARY
Mr. J. R. Raw After being confined to his home in Salamanca Road, Kelburn, for the past month, Mr. James Robert Raw died last evening, at the Lewisham Hospital, after a serious operation. The late Mr. Raw, who was 59 years of age, was well known throughout the Dominion as the general secretary of the National Council of the Licensed Victuallers’ Association. He was born in Yorkshire, and came to New Zealand 35 years ago, and was for some time engaged in commerce in Rotorua and Auckland. While in Rotorua he was president of the Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the Fire Board, and secretary of the Rod and Gun Club. Fourteen years ago he became the organiser for the National Council of the Licensed Victuallers’ Association. Always of a modest and retiring disposition, Mr. Raw was the last man to seek the limelight. Mr. Raw was a prominent Freemason, a member of the Wellington Rotary Club, and a liberal supporter of many philanthropic and charitable organisations. Ho is survived by his widow, two daughters, and a son, who is at present completing his medical studies in England Mr. E. W. Wade Mr. Edmond William Wade, of Office Road, St. Albans, Christchurch, died last week at the age of 61 years. He was born in"Timaru, and served his apprenticeship to the hardware trade with John Edmonds and Co., of Dunedin, later becoming traveller for Thompson Bridger and Co., of Dunedin. For some time he was in business on his own account in Dunedin, and later joined the staff of Maling and Co., of Christchurch. For six years past he had been a manufacturer’s agent. Mr. Wade was an enthusiastic bowler. Seven years ago he was appointed secretary to the Christchurch club and was secretary of the centre for some years, in which capacity he controlled the Dominion tournaments held in Christchurch in 1924 and 1928. At the time of his death he was president of the St. Albans club. He was also president of the Canterbury Commercial Travellers’ club in 1928 and 1929. Mr. Wade is survived by a widow (a sister of Mrs. Forbes, wife of the Prime Minister), two sons and three daughters.
