SHOCK FOR STAFF
Taxes from Australia House London, March IG. Federal Civil Servants in Australia House, whose life for the last six months has been full of doubts and fears, received another shock to-day when, without warning, they were required to complete income tax returns. Hitherto they have not paid the Australian tax, nor, under a reciprocal arrangement, the British income tax. They claim that they have given either signed or implied undertakings that they are not liable for tax. After investigating conditions at Australia House during his visit to the Imperial Conference, the Prime Minister, Mr. J. H. Scullin brought about dristie retrenchments and salary cuts. The staff to-day is little more than a skeleton of its former strength.
