Relief Under No. 5 Scheme CITY COUNCIL DECISION In the latest Olty Corporation Year Book is a graph indicating the number of men employed on relief works by the City Council since the year 1926-27. In this graph the years are shown by uneven lines making their way through squares which indicate the work of the year. From this graph it is shown that a peak was reached in October, 1927, when some 680 unemployed were taken on. From that month in 1927, the peak receded appreciably, until in March, 1928, there were only about ten men left on the list of relief workers. Should the council decide to continue this graphic illustration of Wellington’s unemployed, it will have to double the size of its page for this yean Even in March, when in all the previous years the number of relief workers has usually dropped to 200 or less, there were over 3000 relief workers in the employ of the City Corporation, mostly, it should be added, at the Government’s expense. Yesterday the Mayor, Mr. G. A.. Troup, announced that it had been decided to absorb a thousand more ried unemployed men under the No. o scheme of relief work, which will mean finding married men two, three, or tour days’ work per week at 14/- a day. These men would be employed on such work as constituted labour almost exclusively. What the jobs were he could not say, but the city engineer was at present formulating a schedule such works, which would keep these men in rationed work for a few weeks yet, if the scheme were extended to make that possible. The Mayor is to see the Prime Minister to-day on that ana other matters.
