PETONE CROSSING
Hold-up of Road Traffic When lights are flashing aud bell is ringing it does not always signify that the Petone railway crossing is impassable. Twice last evening these conditions pec tained, and a long line of traffic was held up on both sides of the line. When no train came in sight one motorist, bolder than the rest, at length braved the cros sing, and was followed by the others, bell ringing and lights flashing meanwhile. No railway official was on tbe crossing to stop vehicles or signal them to go forward. The cause of the automatic sig nals working was the stoppage oi a shunting engine and trucks over tbe signal switch for many minutes.
