THE BUN AND‘THE BISCUIT

A Bun and a Biscuit sat one day side by side in a friendly way on a plate in a tea-shop warm and bright, when the door.flew open and—oh, the sight! Walter Geoffrey Jeremy Gee came in. And a greedy boy was he. Said the Bun to the Biscuit: “Look, my friend! I fear your days are near an end; for Walter Jeremy Gee’s delight, is eating biscuits day and night.” The Biscuit frowned in a crusty way, then smiled in spite of its own dismay, and said:

“Though it seems a bit unkind to cast a gloom on your happy mind, I’ve also heard from the wisest ones; that Walter is frightfully fond of buus. Yes; look at him now, and tell me true: Isn’t he gazing straight at you?”

■And at these words, with sad surprise, the other opened his curranty eyes. “You may lie right.” he cried with fear. “But why repeat the things you hear? If it be true, you ought to know it’s not very nice to tell me so; for folk with manners would never choose to spread such very unwelcome news.” The Biscuit chuckled: “I quite agree. Yet isn’t it what, you did to me?”

“Don’t bother me, please!” the Bun replied, as he vainly sought to turn aside. “I know you’re wrong. You can’t be right, for Walter Jeremy’s one delight is eating biscuits, and soon you’ll find that I am the one he leaves behind.”

But while he spoke, I grieve to state, a waitress came and took the plate, and down the shop at half a run, she bore the Biscuit and the Bun; and at his table, nothing loath, Walter Jeremy ate them both.
