HIGH-CLASS RACING PROMISED

Wellington Autumn Meeting Opens To-day THOMPSON AND ST. LEG ER STAKES Guide to Form: Fields Reviewed , (By “The Watcher.”) Prospects for the opening of the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting were never brighter, except in one respect—finance. The course and its appointments are in first-class order, the sting is out of the going, which is perfect, fields are more than average both as regards quality and quantity, the weather seems set fair, and except for the prevailing financial stringency the club can look forward to • a most successful meeting. So far as backers are concerned, they are faced with the usual difficulty of reducing North and South Island form to a common denominator. Unexpected results are always pos- . sible, but this is the season of the year usually associated with reliable form and the success of favourites, as the capabilities of the majority of the runners have been well exposed. Paganelli Goes Well NOTES FROM TRENTHAM

(By “The Watcher.’*) There was a touch of frost in the air at Trentham yesterday morning, but the weather was bright and clear, and later on warm and sunny. Condition* were, in part, perfect, and the tracks were in firstclass order. Eminent ran from the seven furlongs to the three, and was then pulled up. Historic and Zephyrus finished their work by sprinting down the straight. Historic will start in the Thompson Handicap, and Zephyrus in the St. Legcr. B. H. Morris will do the riding. Joie de Vai sprinted the last three of her work in 87sec. Star Stranger, with a lightweight up, always had the better of Chief Link in a mile gallop, running away from him at the finish to record Imln. 43sec.. the first half In 50 3-ssec., and five in Imin. 4see. Star Stranger went well. Chief Link went badly. He carried H. Gray,' and so was conceding Star Stranger plenty of weight, but all the same his trial was dlsappointAutopay sprinted throe in 36sec., and did it well. Lady Quex did * similar pipeopener. Lineage," with a .lightweight up, made * job of Staghunter over five in Imin. 2 2-5 sec., the last half in 49 2-ssec. It was a brilliant performance, despite her lightweight, for she did It well. Staghunter, who returned from Dannevirke without racing can do better than this. Lineage has a’lot of friends for her engagement in the Railway Handicap. Refresher and Chief Joy, on the outside of the course proper, ran just inside six furlongs, the last half in Blsec. They finished practically on term*, both going well. Cyprus and Capa Gold finished together at the end of a halt on the course proper, both going well. Cyprus did not start at Dannevirke owing to shin soreness. Hunting Day worked alone without going fast. Brilliant Six. Eaglet put up a brilliant six on the course proper. She was well out all thfe way, and ran Imin. the last half iniOOisec. Sllvermlne was her mate, but •he ran right away from him. It was an exceptionally good effort. Silvermine’s gallop was a bad one, for he 1* usually a good worker. The fact that both he and Chief Link ran badly in their work suggests that they got full of feed by eating their bedding on the way down. At any rate their form was all wrong. They have worked together three times over * mile on the Hawera track, and both have shaped very pleasingly. There does not seem much need for worry about their poor showing yesterday, though, of course, if it Is to be an indication of their racing, they possess poor prospects. Chief Link s running in the St. Leger will give a line. Vertigern, on the plough, ran seven in Imin. 83 l-ssec. He looks weU. High 1 Comedy, alone, sprinted on the course proper, and hit out well. Rosshire was not galloped. He is sore, and has caused E. Popo a little anxiety, though there is no reason to expect he will be unable to run. Richfield and Kozan ran five on the plough in Imin. ssec. So far no rider has been engaged for Richfield. L. J. Ellis rides Kozan. On the course proper Bronze Eagle finished clear of Columba, Hampden and Dulen at the end of half a mile. He carried a light weight, but went well, and made a lot of friends. He afterward trotted around the two-year-old track, and there was no sign of the lameness of the previous day. E. Burgess will ride him in the Nursery Handicap. Lord Argosy and Silver Salver ran five in Imin. Bsec. Lord Argosy has recovered from hi* soreness. Havering** Effort. Havering finished well clear of King March at the end of six on the course proper in Imin. 19sec., the last half in Msec. King March hung out badly all the way, and took Msec, for his last half. This was his first run on left-handed going, which may account for his hanging out. Havering did not impress, though he eould probably have done better, and he may now take on the Railway Handicap .instead of the Thompson, in which case Gray will ride Eaglet in the mile. Cessation ran six on the plough, the last half in 54sec. Work continued throughout the breakfast interval. Paganelli and Laughing Prince ran six furlongs together in Imin. 15 l-ssec. They ran the first'two in 25jsec., and three in 37 A sec. Paganelli had it on Laughing Prince at the finish. He carried Gray, as against L. G. Morris on Laughing Prince, BO they had their proper weights aboard in what was a first-class gallop. Laughing Prince blew a little afterward, but Paganelli pulled up well. High Falutin’, alone, ran seven in Imin. 30scc., the first three in 38sec., and four in 51SCC. He will Btart on the second day. Black Duke, with Gray up, had ah advantage over Cadland (L. G. Morris) at the end of five in Imin. 2 4-ssec., but Cadland was going well. Hot Tea, who started with them, finished three or four lengths away, and could be termed to have done a satisfactory trial against bis two companions. .My Own and Simba did pace work. My Own’s rider In the Thompson is S. Gerrand. Jenny Diver was sent home from Dannevirke. View Halloa got a break on Fair Weather at the start of half a mile on the course proper, but Fair Weather finished with him, both going nicely. Aspian Still Sore. Aspian worked, but Is still very sore, and may not start In the Challenge Stakes. Hunting Cr> and The Hawk worked on the plough. B. H. Morris will ride Hunting Cry In the Challenge Stakes. Rin Tin Tin did not accompany Black Duke to the meeting. Tentcrden will be ridden in the Railway Handicap by the Dunedin lightweight, W. McEwan, who was successful here in January on Al .Tolson and Black Duke. He will ride Black Duke in the Thompson Handicap. Adelphi was scratched for all engagements at 9 a.m. yesterday. Other withdrawals are Gallant Fox and Kahlkalo* from the Challenge Stakes: Qulnopal from the Hlghweight, and Royal Acre and Miss Shell from all engagements.

RICCARTON GALLOPS

Horses for Trentham Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, March 12. Matters were comparatively quiet at Rlccarton to-day, and the only work of interest consisted of some sprinting tasks allotted to the. contingent which was due to be shipped to Wellington in the evening, and * few gallops by horses booked to race at the Walmate meeting. The course proper was again open, but the plough was most in use. Winsome Hind went five furlongs on the plough in Imin. 4sec. She was benefited considerably by her race at Motukarara. and will be a better filly at Trentham. Zeebrugge and Cricket Bat sprinted three furlongs along the back in 37sec„ and Solvent registered a similar performance. Limerick wan doing better than Coroner at the end o-f five furlongs run in Imin. 4 2-ssec. Full Feather and Ball Dress covered the same ground in Imin. ssec., finishing together, and Sailor's Love followed in Imin. Gsec. Shatter could have done bettor if desired In recording Imin. 33sec. for seven furlongs in company with Taragena. Straightcourse and Owlsflight, who will race at Walmate, galloped six furlongs pleasingly in Imin. 17 2-ssec. Charmeuse was not ridden out in running three furlongs in 38 2-ssec. Night Recital showed encouraging form by decisively beating hix ex-stablemate Flaxbird over five furlongs on the course

proper in Imin. ssec. He has come to hand very satisfactorily, following ou his recent beneficial spell, and should turn out a profitable investment for his new ownertrainer, D. Campbell. Flaxbird, by Songbird from Electric Lass (a half-sister to Gay Sonnet and Night Recital), has not done a great deal of fast work since bis lengthy compulsory absence as a result of an accident at Wingatui in June last, and he is, as yet, backward. He showed marked promise prior to his mishap, and is expected, with a little racing, to soon regain his form.

Parysia was given a useful sprint on the plough without being sent against the watch. She will be ridden at Trentham to-morrow by W. McEwan. Dolomite was sent to Greymouth this week by F. Christmas, and has entered F. Escott’s stable at Omoto. with a view to racing at some of the West Coast meetings. Ball Dress will be ridden in the St. Leger Stakes at Trentham by L. G. Morrie.

OHLNEMURI MEETING Prospects for To-day Dominion Special Service. Auckland, March 13. The weather continues fine, and favourable conditions are expected for the opening of the Ohlnemuri meeting at Paeroa to-morrow. For the Hurdles, Cruachan may be preferred to Marble King and Respirator. Speedmint should be favourite for the Karangahake Handicap, with Instalment and Fedora next in request. There are a number of Improvers In we Novice Handicap, and of these Marechai, Abbey Dream and Wee Prince may be best. Every horse in the Ohlnemuri Cup has a chance, and It should be a fine contest. Assuming that the track will be . hard, Eager Rose, Antique and Clopton may be most fancied In an even betting race. Werata is out of hacks, and cannot start in the Komata Handicap. Purlrl Park will be a strong favourite over Hlata and Valreina. . If Hampton Park rune up to a brilliant track effort during the week, he would win the Paeroa Handicap, but Sir Russell and Lady’s Boy may be better fancied. Only six remain in the McGuire Steeplechase, in which St. Warrlgal may be preferred to Lupin Abbey. Lucky Alice should get her turn In the Netterton Highweight, with Gay Idea also a prospect.

ENGLISH RACING /-This, stakes won in England, Ireland and 'Scotland in 1930 amounted to £823,771, which was £BOOO more than in the previous season, England contributed £735,078, Ireland £51,783, and Scotland £30,1109. The aggregates are for races under Jockey Club rules, and do not include jumping events. The London “Sporting Life,’’.in a review of the flat racing statistics published by Messrs. Weatherby, secretaries to The Jockey Club, states that the figures prove that racing there is in a very healthy state. Altogether 4792 horses were seen out, and there were 200 more two-year-olds in training than in 1929. In England and Scotland the amount won In handicaps was £301,125, selling races £58,781, and weight-for-age races £412,082, During the season under review 1970 flat races were decided, made up of five furlongs and under six, G9B; six furlongs and under one mile, 334; one mile, 349; over one mile and under two, 542; and two miles and over, 47. Of the races five furlongs and under, 493 were confined to two-year-olds.
