i ‘ News from Troops T ' ’ - . ' , ■TOTEM POLE PRESENTED - ■ -(By-BAAL-)-• — A happy gathering took place in the Waiwhetu School on Friday evening, February 20, on the occasion of Miss J. A. Witherington receiving her , warrant as A.CAI., at the hands of Sir Alfred Rbbin, Metropolitan Commissioner. . Among, thoee ’present were D.C. Nelson, D.C.C. Middleton, and D.R.5.11. Drummond. Opportunity was also taken to officially present to “the cub paek a“ beautiful “totem” pole of Maori design. The wood for the totem •pole was given by . Mr. H. Wltlierington, and’the earring of the Maori tiki, which formed the top piece of the pole, was done, “by Mr.' Heber ley, one of the most, ekilled Maori carvers in the Dominion. The scouts gave several interest-. Jng Items, including songs, Maori hakas, and recitations, finishing up with scout games. Altogether' the evening proved most enjoyable, and all are looking forward to a year of good progress. There are three patrols of twenty-four scouts under Keith Ho wan, Ronald 1 Fanthorpe, and Kevin'Osborne, and-a cub pack is being formed. '' “ ’’ ' Sea Scouts. 1 The displays given by the “Britannia and Petone groups of sea scouts at the rally, together with the display of "crossing the Line” by the "Collingwood" Group, was most appropriate for the occasion. ‘The examination for the Frontiersmen’s Cup will be held shortly after Easter, and the “Denton” Cub Cup will also take place about the same time. Tho regatta wUI again be held on Easter Saturday. Natural Camp Group Ends. . ... Tho natural camp group held a dinner at Gamble and Creed’s bn Tuesday, after which they were disbanded. Special thanks are due to Mr. and Mrs. Lowry, of Silverstream, and Mr. C. C. Gifford of Silverstream, for facilities placed at the disposal of the group in the way of materials and camping. •/ 1 ; Training Commissioner at Lyall,Bay. Commissioner for Training Sandford visited the Lyall Bay Group last week, when a talk was given to the boys, followed by games. Scouts Gray have both passed their second class: At a meeting of the group committee held on Thursday last, the hon, secretary reported that £6/17/6 had been handed to' the Slayer’s Earthquake Fund, and that arrangements had been made for social evenings,during the winter months, commencing on the second week in April., P/L. Hassall has gained his all-round cord. Since the New . Year several new cubs, have-been enrolled, and all are keen on tho inter-six competition,. The following are the appointments: —Sixers, N. Beard, Stevens, and Hornlg; ; seconds, Holmes, Knapp,’ and Lambert; cubs. Sellers, Sargison, E. Beard, and G. Waghorn have passed their tenderpad badge. Brooklyn Needs a Hall. The Brooklyn Group Is at present working without a hall, which enables them to put the eighth Scout Law Into operation to. the full. Week-end hikes have been made to the Butterfly, the Second Karakas and Saturday afternoon scouting has been given full rein. After the rally the Toko and Eltham troops which were billetted In the Brooklyn district. over: the .week-end-spent an enjoyable pound night, the games and competitions being.entered into in real scout spirit.
