Two Arrive for Air Force Ordered by the New Zealand Air Force in August last, two Hawker Tomtit aeroplanes have arrived in the Dominion. Two more are at present on order. These machines will be used for training purposes and will give clubtrained pilots who have been granted commissions in the Air Force more advanced training than that which they received in their initial training. The new machines are biplanes, with all metal fuselages. Each has two open cockpits. Ihe rear one of which is for the pupil. It is fitted with a hood which the instructor may pull down over the pupil’s cockpit to allow of training in blind flying. The wings have a span of 28ft. Gin. and the machine is 23ft. sin. long and Bft. Sin. in height. The power unit is a 130 h.p. Armstrong Siddeley Mongoose engine, having five cylinders and being air-cooled. The machine has a speed of 124 m.p.h. at 1.000 feet, and 119 miles per hour at 5,000 feet. It is expected that the machines will go to Masterton for the big air pageant which to be held on Saturday week.
