ENGLISH BLOODSTOCK
A consignment of three English horses was landed by Messrs. Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., ont Tuesday., for the Westmere breeder, Mr, John Donald. One is a two-year-old colt by the young Phalaris sire Tarlonla, who is out of an own sister to the Swynford horse March Along, winner of £5256 in stakes, and the sire of quite a number of winners in Australia to-day. This colt, who is a very well built, well-developed type, is out of one of the most consistent winner-producing mares in Ireland, in Templeboden, by Bushey Park from Stella. It is a great staying family, and recent winners from it include Glenstella, winner of the Grand Prix at Leopardstown; Ballyferis, winner of the Irish Breeders’ Produce Stakes, and many other important events; and Athgreany, dam of the English Derby winner, Trlgo. Stella, the granddam of this colt, is the ancestress of winners of over £193,000 in stakes a wonderful record. Of the two fillies, one that appealed particularly to Mr. Donald on her breeding is by the young Son-in-law horse Bucks Hussar from St. Begoe, a great brood mare, aud a daughter of the famous St. Frusquin, the maternal grandsire of Night Raid, Magpie, etc. St. Begoe is also the dam of False Piety, which, when mated with Totratema, produced that great horse, Mr. Jinks. Mr. Jinks won the Two Thousand Guineas, and stakes totalling over £25,000.
Naturally Mr. Donald intends to mate this filly with Chief Ruler, the halfbrother to Tetratema Manna, winner of the English Derby, Your Majesty, sire of tho dam of Rampion, Parth, third in the Derby, and Cylgad, sire of the dams of Heroic and Cylinder are also closely related to this filly. The second of the fillies is from the same family as Call Boy, winner of the Derby, and Foxlaw, winner of the Ascot Gold Cup, while another high-class performer is Comedy King. This filly is by Desman, a young sire by Desmond, sire of Limond, who has already produced the winners in England of 70 races. Among his successful sons is that good horse Happy Man, winner of the Ascot Gold Cup. The dam of this filly is a half-sister to Farcee, a very good winner In Australia some years ago. She is sired by Harry of Hereford, a full-brother to Swynford, and her second dam is by Carbine. Mr. Donald has, therefore, brought to New Zealand three young English thoroughbreds with very high-class staying credentials. They landed in excellent order, and created very keen Interest among racing men and breeders who were present to see them land.
