INTER-CLUB SHOOT

Union Shield Matches KARORI AND PETONE WIN The annual competitions for the Union Shields, senior and junior, were won by the Karori and Petone teams respectively at Trentham on Saturday. Conditions throughout the afternoon left little to be desired, and, as a result, some excellent cards were returned. The highest individual scorer on the day was C. Whiteman (Upper Hutt), who put together an excellent 103 out of a possible 105. He was closely followed by his club-mate, B. Dunn, with 101, and next in line was F. Ching (Karori) with 100.

The Karori team’s win is its seventh in succession. The Petone team regained the junior shield, which it lost to Karori last year. When the match commenced at 2 p.m. on the 300 yards mound, there was practically no wind, but not a few found themselves in difficulties through elevation trouble. However, some good results were seen. The scores for the various teams at 300 yards were: Karori, 255; Suburbs, 239; Petone, 238;. Upper Hutt, 235; Old Navals, 231. At the next range, 500 yards, some excellejjt shooting occurred, the wind having dropped to the merest zephyr, and the light was good. Two “possibles” were registered at this range. The teams’ scores at 500 yards were: Karori, 261; Petone, 255; Upper Hutt, 252; Suburbs. 252; Old Navals, 250. A difference of only 11 points between the highest and lowest teams, which £.omr>rised eight men, gives an indication of the closeness of the scoring at this mound.

On moving back to 600 yards the Karori team (516) had a lead of 23 points from Petone (403) ; then followed Suburbs 491, Upper Hutt 487, and Old Navals 481. A very useful team score of 251 at this range gave the winners a grand total of 767, or the splendid average of 95.8 a roan. Then followed Upper Hutt, with 741, who “counted out” the Suburbs team with the same score, Petone 732, and Old Navals 730. With the Juniors. The finish of the junior match was most exciting, Petone getting home from Karori by the small margin of two points. The standard of shooting among the “tyros” was very good, quite a number returning 33’s throughout the afternoon, and the average for the winning team worked out at 91.

At the conclusion of the meeting President W. Mcßain, chairman of the Wellington Rifle Association, presented ths shields to the presidents of the winning teams. y President R. E. Flaws, of the Petong Club, pcted as chief range officer. The following are the results:—
