IN A DRUNKEN STUPOR
Stated to be a methylated spirits addict, Cornelius James Howard, labourer, aged 55, who was found unlawfully in an enclosed yard at 76 Taranaki Street, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment by Mr. T. B. McNeil, S.M, in the Police Court yesterday. , , ± Sub-Inspector Lopdell said that about ten days ago the accused had been convicted of drunkenness. lie was out of work and appeared to be getting into vagrant ways. „ , ~ Tn reply to the magistrate, Howard said he slept out baeause he had nowhere else Lopdell: When found by, a constable he was in a deep stupor, and remained ip that condition for some time after his arrest. Chance to Mend Ways One more chance to mend her ways was given a married woman, ,with two children, who admitted a second offence of drunkenness. She was convicted and discharged bn condition that she took out a prohibition order. Sub-Inspector Lopdell said that the husband of the accused had expressed the opinion that on account of her habits his wife was qualifying for a term on the island. However, he was willing to give her every assistance to lead a decent life, provided she took out a prohibition order against herself. “I consent to that,” replied the woman in a trembling voice, when asked by the magistrate if she wished to say anything. , The magistrate: You must take out an order immediately. “Can I have my name kept out of th? papers?” she asked. The magistrate: Very well, if you think that wall help you. Remands Granted On the application of Sub-Inspector Ward, Ethelbert Coleman, a cook, aged 30 years, was remanded until February 11 on a charge of indecent exposure. Charged with stealing a suitcase and contents valued at £lO, the property of Janet Russell, Sarah McCluskie, domestic, aged 21, was remanded until tomorrow. She was similarly remanded on a charge of stealing a lady’s coat, valued .at £5, the property of Linda Handley. An Order Broken Convicted of a breach of his prohibition order, Sydney Arthur Stringer, stoker, aged 30, was fined £2. On a charge of drunkenness he was fiued £l.
