REBUILDING ANGORA

Professor’s Assignment

Professor Klemeus Holznieister, one of the leading and most original of Vienna architects, has been commissioned by the Turkish Government to build a large part of new Angora in his own distinctive style. At a lecture just delivered in Vienna he showed the audience some remarkable pictures of the Government quarter on a hillside near the capital. In the middle of November the new buildings of the War Office, with 400 rooms, and of the general staff, with 250 rooms, were finished. Two thousand workmen are now busy completing the other official buildings. ■ The future residence of Kemal Pasha, “Gazhi Evi,” is among their number: this will be decorated in, Viennese style. The House of Parliament, close by, is to crown the official quarter.' Below it will be d military school for 1000 students and a casino. Barracks for the police and gendarmerie and the Ministries of- Work and the Interior are to be completed in a few months. Finally, a military hospital for 500 patients is being constructed, and the idea of a central railway station is under consideration. ....

Austrians have also been invited to reorganise the Turkish police, postal service. and agriculture, and many Austrian teachers of .arts, crafts nnd trade, also of music, work at the Angora schools, nnd a large part of the railway administration and construction is entrusted to Austrians.
