It is not often that the serenity of th« Petone Borough Council meetings i» - broken, but last evening was an exception. Entering without any warning, a man asked leave to address the council. The Mayor, Mr. D. McKenzie, then requested the'town clerk to inquire the intruder's business. ' w , ~ In a Icuid voice, loua enough to aaaresi the whole council instead of a single individual. the man claimed the right as a ratepayer to know why he had been asked by the Social Welfare Department to work 16 hours for a “ ” ten bob. . The Mayor said that it was entirely in the hands of the council whether it would listen to him or not. On the motion of Councillor Brocklebank it was resolved that the council would be prepared to consider any complaints providing they were properly submitted in writing. “You will not listen to me, then?’ said the newcomer. t “You are only interrupting the meeting.” replied the Mayor. “I am entitled to speak as a ratepayer. If you will not listen to me now. I will soon bring along a mob who will make T °No reply to this was forthcoming from either the' Mayor or councillors, and the man realising it would be futile to press his claims anv further, made toward the door. His parting shot was. “We will hear a bit more about this Borough Council before the election.” . . The council whs soon again in the midst of the evening’s routine business.
