IN THE SOUNDS
Wellington Yachtsmen HOLIDAY CRUISES Although disqualified for leaving Wellington on Christmas Eve, when they had been notified that the start of the Royal Bort Nicholson Yacht Club’s annual race to Tory Channel had been postponed until the following morning, the doings of three boats —Marangi, Alisa and Nanette —which duly arrived at Jackson’s Bay are of interest. A special telegram to “The Dominion” slates that Ailsa left the boat harbour, Wellington, at 6.10 p.m. on December 24, and Marangi five minutes later. Ailsa had a try-sail and Marangi had taken in three reefs. A fresh northerly was blowing, which continued until the yachts came in sight of the leading lights of Tory Channel, when it veered round to a light southerly. ■ Marangi entered Jackson’s Bay at the stroke of midnight, Ailsa arriving at 12.30 p.m. McLauchlan’s launch had arrived in the afternoon, Vagabond had come from Picton; Nanette, which left the boat harbour a few minutes after Marangi, missed the tide and spent the night in tlie Straits, arriving at about seven o’clock Christmas morning. Ailsa intended leaving the same day for Nelson, and Nanette intended cruising in Queen Charlotte Sound. Marangi left for Torrent Bay at about seven o’clock on Christmas morning under a light southerly wind, putting in that evening at Guards Bay. About 10 a.m. the launch Resolution passed Cannibal Cove heading evidently for Pelorus Sounds. On Boxing Day, Marangi left Guards Bay and missed the tide at French Pass. Due to a light wind and an adverse tide she Tut into Katherine Cove.
