YACHTING THRILLS

Racing at Evans Bay BOISTEROUS NORTHERLY Yacht racing at Evans Bay on Saturday afternoon provided spectators with plenty of thrills. Three of the centreboard boats capsized while rounding a buoy off the Patent Slip shortly after the start of a race, and another broke her mast. The squally northerly' wind sweeping up the bay made things very uncomfortable for the occupants of the boats, and tested their seamanship to the utmost. In the centreboard event, Kio II was first home, beating Idono by one minute 46 seconds. The handicaps, which were sealed, were not made available by the handicapper, Mr. R. Darrant, last evening, and therefore the results given below are the order in which boats finished, and may be subj'ect to adjustment when the handicaps are considered. In the keelers’ race, J. Baldwin’s Wairere I. secured a good win, arriving home about four minutes ahead of the second boat, Viola. Marangi, the scratch boat, was not up to her usual form, and only succeeded in gaining fourth place. Several of the boats did not complete the course. Results in detail are: — KEEL YACHTS.
