BISHOP ATTACKED
Scene in Famous Church
JUDGE LINDSEY EJECTED
(Rec. December 8, 10 p.m.)
New York, December 7.
One of the most sensational incidents to occur in the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral of Saint John the Divine was precipitated to-day by exJudge Lindsey, of Cole ’ado, the celebrated advocate of companionate marriage. During the sermon by Bishop Manning, ex-Judge Lindsey rose and attacked the latter for his sermon against an experimental five-year childless marriage period. Detectives were present in the congregation, since Mr. Lindsey had announced that he would take Issue with Bishop Manning’s intention to preach against the subject, and they forcibly ejected the jurist, who is one of the best-known figures in American social life In the Courts.
The scene was unparalleled in the history of the church in America.
Wheu the row started there were cries in front and behind of "Throw him out!” Women cried: “Lynch him!” Another called out: “Good on you, Bishop, old man!”
Those nearest Judge Lindsey pulled him down. Several seized his legs-and others pummelled his middle. Ushers and the police fought their way to him, grabbed him, and bundled him through the nearest exit.
Bishop Manning remained in the pulpit calling for a hymn, but the organist was so excited that be could not find the music. During his address the Bishop said that those who arranged for Judge Lindsey’s presence would have a lot to answer for to fathers and mothers. Later, ex-Judge Lindsey was charg ed at the police station with disorderly conduct.
The congregation rose after ex-Judge Lindsey was forcibly removed and cheered the Bishop for several minutes.
Bishop Manning, who is known as the stormy petrel of the Protestant Episcopal Church in America, has for many years strongly opposed within and without the church every form of social innovation.
