“Terrible Shop Windows”
“The usual run of shop windows is reallv terrible. God knows we in England ure bad enough in comparison with other countries, but you -are a step worse here,” said Lord Barnby in the course of his address to the Chamber of Commerce yesterday. “AVhen president of the Federation of British Industries, I made a feature of stressing the need for art in industry, he said “AVe lost nationally by the neglect of the artistic in the appearance and the marketing of our products. May I be permitted to say the same of New Zealand? May I instance the usual run of shop windows’ displays, the style of your buildings? Modern buildings in the United States show what, without much, if any, extra cost, can be done. The cultivation of the artistic develops many virtues in the national character.
