GOOD ATHLETICS

Ogg Wins Quarter-mile BIG ENTRIES RECEIVED Another of the series of Monday evening sports meetings was conducted at Athletic Park last evening under the auspices of the New Zealand Amateui Athletic Association by the Miramar Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club. Like its predecessors, the meeting was successful and particularly enjoyable. Athletic Park is some distance from the centre of the city, and it has been difficult so far —with the public wakening only slowly to the excellence of these Monday meetings—to attract very many spectators. To this disadvantage of distance, another was added last evening with the coldness of the wind and a generally threatening outlook. The entries were at least equal to those of the preceding Monday—excluding the cycling events, which can be held only at the Basin Reserve —and in the two jumps more competitors took part than is usually the case. As luck would have it, however, the weather was against the jumpers, and even the New Zealand champion, Bradey, was a few inches below his normal jump. This event, the high jump, brought to light a promising competitor, J. Long, who reached an inch less than Bradey. On his handicap he won easily. S. Gudsell won the walk in good style. He and W. Tonkin were the only entries. Ogg Once More. ; ■

Four heats were necessary in the open sprint event, which was won by N. Glover. He ran from the 7syd. mark and covered what remained of the 100 yards in 101-ssec. The wind was with the sprinters, and against competitors in the broad jump. H. Le Grove and S. Fergusson were the other placed men in the 100 yards. W. Ogg, who has a 100 and a 220 to his credit this season, romped home in the 440 yards off the 18yd. mark —considered by some too liberal a handicap. The quarter attracted a firstclass field of 18, with Pickering, off 2yds., on the back mark. M. Furlong came second in this event, the longest distance he has had an opportunity of competing in this season. F. Lawer and G. Prosser were outstanding in the mile and a half min, and Barclay nearly ran into a well-deserved place. Lawer has been running well and won the half-mile a fortnight .aS®. His sprint last evening was a great sightA. Badland and C. Scott, two good juniors, were first and second in a wellcontested 300 yards junior event; . Miss E. Sharp had a popular win. bhe ran in good style and the distance suited her. So far she has not been placed in a final this season, and the handicapper gave her an extra half-yard last evening, which, on her running, she might well have done without. Campbell (18yds.) got away well, and at the halfway mark looked like a place-winner. He faded, however, as Ogg got out in front. Ogg. running like a champion, went ahead steadily, leaving the field behind. He won —easing up slightly—by eight yards from Furlong, with Wilson a foot away. C. Thompson (Byds.) was close up, and the back-marker, T. Pickering (2yds.), who had been pocketed at the half-way mark, was not far behind. There, was a field of 18 in this fast and well-contested event. One Mile and a Half Handicap.—F. Lawer (00yds.), 1; G. Prosser (scr.), 2; H. McKinnon (110yds.), 3. Time, Train. 20sec. A. Barclay (50yds.) was the fourth man home. Prosser, J. Shepherd, and D. Pederson were the three scratch men, and with half a mile gone Prosser had left his co-markers and was drawing near to Barclay. The remainder of the field of 12 were more or less in their positions, except that Lawer was striding out in front of D. Barn (100yds.) and other 110-yard men. At the mile mark Lawer-was leading McKinnon and Barn, and Barclay had come up with Prosser. The pace was good at this stage of the race, and an exciting contest was expected. Barn fell back, however, and there was a good bunch of five running strongly at the bell.

Prosser, who had run an excellent race, was soon out in front of Lawer, and looked a certain winner. With 100 yards to go, Lawer mqde a fine burst and passed the leader. From here to the tape it was a great battle, but Prosser could not catch Lawer, and the latter won by six or seven yards. McKinnon was a similar distance behind Prosser, with Barclay close up. 300 Yards Junior Handicap.—A. Badland (I2yds.), 1; S. Stott (syds.), 2; B. Mountjoy (10yds.), 3. Time, 35 4-ssec. There was a field of 13 in this event and the bunch stayed together most of the distance until Badland and Stott got away from the rest at the 200 yards mark, the former winning by seven yards. Mountjoy was close up. Two-mile Walk.—S. Gudsell (scr.), 1; W. Tonkin (90yds.), 2. Time, 15min. 17 2-ssec. Won easily after a strong steady walk.
