Woodville Meeting Opens To-day

A REVIEW OF THE FIELDS

(By “The Watcher.”)

The summer meeting of the Woodville District Jockey Club will open to-day, and conclude to-morrow. The track is in flrstclass order,Zand fields are large, in two cases there being the possibility of a division. As this will be the last district meeting before the holiday racing carnival, more than ordinary interest will attach to the form displayed. The principal races to-day are tic Bolton and Oete Handicaps. The programme is as follows: —

running well, for she beat a fair field at Fejlding. Llandudno’s class on the flat entitles him.to consideration, and he comes from a strong Jumping stable. Call Again has plenty of wplght, but might run prominently, for ba had bad luck at Feiidtng. Mountain Heath, Whakquri, Kaokaorog ami Evening Hero seem lightweight possibilities. Easterly, Llandudno and Kaokaoroa should run wejl. ■9 12.30 p.m. TRIAL PLATE, of 100 govs. Six furlongs. Weight—All 8.11 Glider Appledore Joie de Vai Kalmuk Brambleton Arikira Enter Viaduct Flute Queanbeyan Jadarino Elizabeth Bpverage Blacksmith Intruder Gold Sand Both Appledore and Kglmtik will be bracketed In the Malden race. Kalmuk Is engaged later In the day, but if both start here they should go well. Appledore's form nt Klecgrton was improving and better than maiden form, though it Is possible he may find to-day's distance a trifle short. Joie de Vai has run creditably twice now in similar class, and appears to be improving. Beverage and Viaduct ran well at Felldlng, and Gold Sand has shown form in this class. The Elgar bracket and Joie do Vai should be in demand. IL Reed will ride Joie de Vai; Gray, who has been on her in her last two starts, being required' for Beverage. 1.15 p.m.

Merry Damon's running at Feildlng. where be met a stronger field, points to him ielng prominent in to-day’s race, and the long Straight at Woodville will be in bjs favour. Gay Crest ought to rqn well, but it looks like Merry Damon on recent showings beating him. Paratoo Is likely to lie one of the favourites, and on form, he should be hard to beat. Blimp is a possibility, though he is not very consistent, High Mutin’ should.show up, while Palko, Spearrqlss and Bold Front may run well. , On the whale, backers may prefer Merry Damon, Paratoo, and High Mutin'. 3 p.m. NURSERY HANDICAP, of 130 sovs. Five furlongs.

lu the event of the race being run without division the fallowing horses will bo bracketed on the totalizator: —Chief Cook and Chief Clerk, Teller and Buster Browu. As only two scratchings are required m the two-year-old race to avoid a division, there should be every chance of this nuisance being eliminated. Form points to Chief Cook and Hpmpflen in the first division, and to Esteem and Royal Baby in the second. There are some unknown qualities, including the Lord QueX filly Quexfram, who will carry the same colours as the Australian winners Movie Star and Hunt the Slipper, She may be on a par, but on form backers will probably stick to those first-mimed, 3.45 p.m.' OETE HANDICAP, of 200 sovs.

respected, but he has a lot of Weight, and the preference is for some with lighter burdens. Goshawk will probably need sharpening up, but Arrow Lad, First Maney, Royal Parade, Cuticle and Atholspear are all in seasoned condition. Taranto and Limbsin might surprise, but form points to Arrow Lad, P.oyal Parade, and Atholspear, The latter Is also in the last race of the day. 3.30 p.m. .. .. . MANGARAWA HACK HANDICAP, of 130 sovs. Six furlongs.

Five scratchings are needed to avoid a division jn tlie hack sprint; so that the chances are against a single event. Tripping’s form at Rlccarton was good, and she appeals most of the first lot, where Statuary and Kalmuk (if started here) might be prominent. Of the second lot there is a fair amount of good form, but the best seem to be the recent efforts of Knollmere and Rothen. 4.15 p.m.

The field of 19 in the hack distance race may produce a surprise result, as there are many to be included in the possibilities. The topweight, Loi-dlike, should show up, and the recent form of Aemil, Pewa, Arrowhead and Hawksbgw demands consideration. Lordllke and Pewa should be prominent. 5 p.m. BOROUGH HANDICAP,' of 150 sovs. Seven

Head Serang ran good races at Riccarton without much luck. One of his efforts was a third to Cylinder, so that he seems well placed in to-day’a race. Atholspear was another who met with bad luck at the New Zealand Cup meeting, and if reserved for this race he should be dangerous. They seem to have the best credentials of the field which, however, contains possibilities like Desert Song, Queen's Choice, Maui, Full Mtirk, Kabikatoa, and Hopwood. Form, however, points to the pair at the'head of the list. NOTES AND COMMENTS (By "The Watcher.”) Nominations for the Stratford Racing Club’s annual meeting, to be held on January 1 and 2, will close on Thursday at 9 p.m. The Stratford telegraph office closes at 8 p.m. Nominations for the summer meeting of the Marton Jockey Club, to be held on January 1 and 2, will close on Friday at 9 p.m.

A prospective buyer was making Inquiries a few days ago concerning Full Feather, but It is unlikely that the Autumnus horse will leave his present quarters.

A. H. Eastwood will ride Gay Crest in the Auckland Cup.

J. H. X’rosser flas decided on a trip to Auckland with Great Star, who may pay his way if) sprint events at the northern holiday fixture.

A'. E. Ellis contemplates riding at the Auckland meeting during the holidays, and he will handle First Sight in his engagements.

The Awapuni lady trainer, Mrs. A. W. McDonald, who had to undergo an operation in October, is still confined to her room. She bad a bad turn about a week ago, but at latest reports she was progressing favourably..

Trainer W. McKinnon has secured a lense of the two-year-old Brittany from the owner und breeder, Mr. J. D. Ormond. Brittany is a fair sort of two-year-old, by Araqslq from Idealise.

The friends ot P, P. Neagle will be pleased to learn that he is making satisfactory progress from the trouble that has had him confined in a private hospital for so many months. He has placed Manifesto under the control of A. G. Dixon, of Taradale, lu view of competing at IValpukurnu on Boxing Day.

One result of Sargon's success at Takapuna Is that lie is being discussed as a strong opponent for Cylinder In the Great Northern Derby. Most people, however, will prefer to rely on Cylinder, who may find a Riccarton pair hardest to beat. Gustavo will be much better by New Year’s Day than when he competed here last month, while Praise is another good prospect, provided she trains on.

Great Charter, who was galloped on in the running of the Criterion Handicap at Riccarton, has made a complete recovery, and will be at Ellerslie on Boxing Day and subsequent days. Commandant, Courtesy, Monarchy and Chrysology, also in It. Alexander's stable, are all pleasing in theif track essays in preparation for the trip to Auckland.

Wellington Stake Reduction. There will be a reduction of £lOOO in the stakes to be distributed at the summer meeting of the Wellington Racing Club next month, as compared with the last summer fixture. This has been necessitated by the bad financial result of the spring fixture in October, when the tbtalisator receipts slumped to the extent of £45,198. The stake Wellington Cup has not been touched, and will again be £l5OO, the' policy of the club being to cater as far as possible for the better class of horse. The reduction is spread over the remaining events of the three flays, anti though it is to be regretted that such a step was necessary, in all it amounts to a modest 8 per cent, Mr. J. M. Griffiths lias the programme ready for issue. Needs Investigation.

Six years ago Con. Reed was killed as the result of a'fall during a race at Taumaruuui. Twelve months ago, the favourite for the Taumarunul Cup, Ohiuemiirl, ridden by H. Gray, fell, and the rider received a broken collarbone. Ou Saturday Ohinemurl (0. Mclually) was started iu the Taumarunui Cup, and again she fell while running to the three furlong post. .She was in front when she began to falter, and H. Goldfinch on Hakauoa, intuitively saw the danger. lie rushed his horse up on the outside of the leader, aud when Hakanoa was clear in the lead from Ohinemurl, the latter foil. Valsler (H. Gray), and Cruachan (C. Goulsboro) were in behind, while King Willonyx (Fergus) was on their heels, and Trishna (W. H. Jones) three lengths back when Ohinemurl crashed, Valsler, Cruachan and Trishna fell over her, and King Willonyx was badly interfered with. This left Hakanoa with a lead of ten lengths over King Willonyx, and he just romped home. Five minutes later Ohinemurl was remounted to secure third money. The ground where the smash occurred was very soft, and in the later races the riders were instructed to keep out and so avoid it. Nono of the jockeys was seriously Injured, but O. Mclnally was badly shaken. Conditions In Belgium. The breeding of thoroughbred horses seems to be iy u bad way, in Belgium. Most noted breeding establishments in that country are, or were, owned by Mr. Wittouek, one of the lending racing men of the Continent. Recently Mr. Wittouek held a dispersal sale, and only six colts changed hands. The average price obtained for these was It is plated that there aye now only two breeders in Belgium- As 60 per cent, of the races in Belgium are reserved for horses bred in the country, good class yearlings should be an attractive investment. Entry fees are very low, and are added to the stakes in every race. As things are, there does not appear to be any inducement for anyone to invest money iu the breeding industry. Prices obtained

for yearlings would not cover the cost of service fees in most other countries. World’s Greatest Stake-earner. If Phar Lap retains his present form for another couple of years, he will be able to win sufficient welglit-for-age races in Australia to increase his present, total of nearly £47,000 to £70,000. Meanwhile America's latest figures prove that Gallant Fox is the world’s greatest winner. In some previous computations breeders' premiums and the value of trophies were omitted, and they, of course, should have been credited to him. A complete return shows that for eleven wins, three seconds, and two thirds, Gallant Fox has won £G8.273 in stakes, and that puls him well ahead of anything else. Ksar’s winnings, when the franc was at an inflated value, amounted.to the paper total of £07,008, and that was the previous best. Marton Summer Meeting. The Marton Jockey Club's summer meeting will be held on January 1 and 2, and although its naturally clash with several other North Island fixtures, the club has been enterprising enough to tempt owners with substantial stakes, and the coming meeting should be as wejl patronised as ever. The Marton Cup carries a stake of 400 sovs., and will be decided on the first day; the rider of the winner will receive a gold-mounted whip presented by Mr. J. Jackman, of Felldlng. On the second day the Aidworth Stakes, of 230 sovs., is the chief attraction. The open sprints are the Railway Handicap, of 200 sovs., and the Telegraph Handicap, of 100 sovs. Nominations for all events will close with the secretary, Mr. Arthur Wny, P.O. Box 3, Marton, on Friday, December 12, at 9 p.m. WANGANUI NOTES Paratoo for Woodville Dominion Speciai Service, Wanganui, December 8. H. Dulipu was in Wanganui this morning, and schooled Onepal apd Auctioneer over the hurdles. Onepal shaped well in clearing four hurdles, though he jumped rather high. With experience the big son of Acre promises to make a good hurdler. Auctioneer also cleared four obstacles, taking his fences like a natural jumper. It was a splendid display for a novice, and he looks likely to make good at the ganiv. Jack Plane also schooled over a couple of hurdles, jumping cleanly. ’ Paratoo left for Woodville tliik morning, but IV. H. Dwyer did not take Knollmere across. The pair were galloped on the plough yesterday, and Knollmere is said to have met with a slight mishap, which account® for him not making the trip. Paratoo will be ridden by R. Reed in the Bolton Handicap. Arisus, looking well after his race at Feildlng, was given a good working gallop this morning. George Laing is taking Queanbeyan and AU Humbug to Woodville. They are improving, but will need further time, High Mutin’ left Foriiell for Woodville this morniug. He is said to be in great fettle.
